we do have melissa bell, our connection is back. melissa, continue, please, on what you have learned new today. >> reporter: this man, who was killed here last night, who had taken on the police, we know from sources he was a french national, that he was known for his radicalization and that before that, he'd spent time in jail, specifically for attacking the police as well. he'd already tried to shoot police officers back in 2001. so he was a known quantity. we're going to learn more about him over the course of the day, but one of the big questions overnight has been, what is the link with belgium? because one of the surprising things about this attack was the speed with which isis came out with a claim of responsibility. a claim of responsibility that within a couple of hours of the attack taking place here at about 9:00 p.m. local time, a couple of hours later, that very clear statement, saying that a soldier of the caliphate had been responsible, and naming him as abu yousef, the belgian. what was the link of the man killed her

let me go back to melissa bell in paris, france, for cnn. melissa, we're now learning that oe of the policeman has been killed and that the attacker has been taken down. >> reporter: right. what we didn't know is whether that sound we heard 45 minutes ago, attempted assumed were fireworks and now we realize were gunshots, was that on the part of the man attacking or the police dealing with an attacker in the middle of the champs-elysees. clearly, a serious incident here in the heart of paris. the scene, as you say, the entire champs-elysees, entirely closed down. this is just with a couple of days to go before france's presidential election and in a country that has been on edge and under a state of emergency for months now. we don't know anything about who was involved in the attack and whether, as i say, those gunshots that we heard earlier was a result of the police trying to get an attacker under control or whether the attack was carried out with gunfire. it's a reminder as well that however you try to police the streets, however vast the

let's go live to paris and bring in melissa bell. good morning to you. what is the reaction there? and what does it tell us about the political climate there in france? >> reporter: well, france is waking up this morning to the day after a political revolution. for a start, the mainstream parties that have shared power in france since 1958 are licking their wounds and trying to work out what went wrong. it is the first time that neither are making it through to the second round. that's a measure of the change that france is going through. you mention also the vastly different programs now. and one of the far rights, marine centrist, macron's proposals, they are outsiders. she represents the far right. he, because a few months ago, he set on this political adventure, getting to the top without an established party behind him. everyone thought he was mad. it could go nowhere. and yet, here we are, a few months later, as you say, the favorite to go in. and i think it is a measure of the thirst for change we've been following in the western world. so far, we've seen the old team betwee

melissa bell is in paris for us right now.you hearing there and what is the atmosphere there ahead of this vote? >> reporter: we're now in a slightly odd period between the end of the campaign last night at midnight local time and when the polls will open tomorrow morning, sunday morning at 8:00 a.m. paris time where the candidates can no longer go out and campaign, polls can no longer be compiled or reported on and so you're sort of in this waiting period. now, this has been an incredibly tense, incredibly close campaign. four leading candidates are really very close to one another and it's very hard to tell who's actually going to get through to that second round. now of course the events right here on the champs-elysees of thursday night will have played in to the hand of the far right marine le pen. you referred to trump's almost endorsement of her. she has ever since donald trump's victory in the united states said, look, i am the one who most resembles donald trump here in france and there is some truth to that. she does

melissa bell is joining me now. what is the mood like there today?t attack could have an impact on the election? >> reporter: it is a big question. we are a few hours really shy of the official close of campaigning here in france ahead on this hugely important election which we'll see a number of candidates with very different programs and programs for the most part that call for a massive change in france's -- the future of france's politics. they'll be facing off. how will this have played out in their minds? that is a big unknown and because campaigning closes at midnight tonight, we're not going to get any more opinion polls until the french go to the polls on sunday morning. the first measure we're going to have about how this played into the campaign will come at 8:00 p.m. local time with the results of the first round of voting which should give us an idea of whether marine le pen, the far right leader, who has really been seeking to make capital out of what has happened here in the last 24 hours, how she's polled, has she managed to convince

let's go back to cnn international correspondent melissa bell joining us live in paris. lissa, there were new developments while we were listening to president trump. get us up to speed. >> reporter: among them, jake, the fact that french authorities have now opened an anti-terror investigation. so the strongest indication yet that french authorities believe that this may well be terror-related. i would like to show you the scene down there on the champs-Élysees as we speak. it was under two hours ago. we have a much clearer picture of what happened. we have had it confirmed by authorities. a car pulled up alongside a police van that was parked right up there where you can see that massive police presence. a man came out of the car, began shooting at the police van. of course, one police officer has, sadly, lost his life. two others wounded. that assailant taken down by the police very quickly. now, we had heard those gunshots, what we now know were the gunshots and assumed they were something much less serious, and that's still the champs-Élysees entirely cordoned off as

melissa bell following the situation there at a polling station in the 18th. we're looking at these live images. presently 5:01 a.m. here in the united states. 11:02 in paris. marine le pen there casting her ballot. tell us about the feeling of people as they go to the polls. >> reporter: well, on one hand, a sort of bewilderment because there is, as you mentioned a moment ago, this vast array of candidates. 11 candidates in all with very different programs, many of them with profoundly radically different ideas of what france should be if they're going to be elected. so this sense of bewilderment faced with such a vast political choice but also a sense it is essential to come out and vote. you can see behind me the door to that voting station, there's been a steady trickle of voters coming here over the course of the last three hours. all of the ones we've spoken to said it is absolutely essential to come out and vote. they had a real sense of taking part in a historic poll. i think that is the overriding feeling here in france this morning. a certain apprehe

our cnn international correspondent melissa bell is on the scene for us. ssa, this is unfolding right now on the city's busiest streets. tell us the latest. >> reporter: the champs-Élysees is still completely cut off, just over two hours after this attack took place. a lot of the details of what happened have been cleared up by authorities. you know, since then we heard what we now know were these gunshots from up here on the cnn terrace, overlooking as you say what is one of the busiest avenues in france, also one of the most heavily policed. now, we are still under a state of emergency here in france as a result of the terrorist attacks of the last couple of years. the champs-Élysees in particular, this iconic avenue in paris is always heavily policed. what we now know is one of the many police vans who patrol this street, was just outside one of those police vans that that attacker pulled up in his car and opened fire, tragically killing one of those policemen, wolf. those are the facts we now know. also that france has opened an anti-terror investigatio

let's go live to paris and bring in cnn's melissa bell. , you can't overstate what an earthquake this was politically here. how are people there reacting? and what is next in this election process? >> reporter: well, for start, the main political parties that shared power for decades now are licking their wounds and wondering what has gone so terribly wrong. neither has either party not been president going through to the second round of voting. two visions that now face french voters, as you say r starkly different visions of the future and they have starkly different consequences for france's relationship to the rest of the world. not only to the european union, of course marine le pen would have sought to withdraw france from the euro and brought about the collapse of both france is a founding member of the union. emmanuel macron is a fur vent member. the european union to try to rebuild in a way it hasn't been able to do since brexit because because it was waiting to see the outcome of this particular outcome in france. europe will cons

>> we begin our breaking coverage with melissa bell. she is at the scene of the shooting in paris. melissa, what can you tell us about the attacker and the fact that isis has now claimed responsibility? >> reporter: well, what was so interesting was the claim of responsibility came so quickly. the attack happened here on this avenue four hours ago. the claim of responsibility came through about an hour ago. with that mention of the word fighter, isis claiming in the statement that the man who committed this attack tonight was in fact an isis fighter. what the we've seen in the last few weeks in france, not the big attacks that cause massive civilian casualties, but smaller attacks specifically focused on security forces. we saw it at a louvre, we saw it at oralarly airport, paris's sed largest airport. where is the previous two i've mentioned, sort of isis inspired no firm link between the attacker and isis, this very quick claim of responsibility with the fighter in question named. which does suggesting a stronger link perhaps between the organization and the attacker that carried
