my colleague nbc's craig melvin is in lafayette. craig, the first responders probably prevented more bloodshed by getting there so quickly. what else do we know about this shooter and about this investigation? >> no doubt at all, peter. we just heard from the police chief there. he said those officers just so happened to be in the parking lot on duty when the call came in. they were i side in less than 60 seconds. it also sounds like perhaps the shooter had intended to wreak even more havoc and was in the process of reloading when he saw the officers and then decided at that point to turn the gun on himself. that news conference that just wrapped up let's recap the highlights from that. we found out there in addition to the wigs and glasses that were found in his car, the police chief said that he left the keys on top of one of his tires as well. in addition to that we found out that they have spent the better part of the past 12 hours or so talking to folks inside the theater, roughly 160 people. they've talked to of the 300 people

let's get right to nbc's craig melvin in lafayette. there are also some stories of heroism e moerching from last night. what do we know and what's the latest on the shooting? >> reporter: one of the stories of heroism was this teacher who apparently despite being shot in the leg managed to pull the fire alarm which sent folks scattering out of that theater. law enforcement saying it was probably the pulling of the fire alarm that saved lives here. a picture of the shooter continues to emerge. it seems every 20 or 30 minutes we are getting new nuggets. and the past 30 minutes, we have found out from the lagrange georgia, police chief, we spoke with him by phone and he said that at one point the shooter owned a bar in lagrange georgia. the bar was shut down after law enforcement raided it. for underage drinking. >> i'm sorry. i'm going to jump in and go to that presser in phenix city alabama, now. >> anywhere around us here and so we're -- this is an ongoing case and i hope you understand that it is still early. so we will be focusing to

i'm joined by craig melvin. you're down there in another trouble spot.ial incident. this is an incident of what mental illness? gun safety what is the aspect of this that you can figure for a national audience? >> you know what chris, i think it's both. and the folks we have talked to her have said as much. law enforcement and local elected officials. here you have a guy who back in 1989 1989 we uncovered documents that shows he was charged with trying to hire a third party to set fire to an attorney's office. then you fast forward. several years after that there was a criminal deomestic violence complaint. he wasn't charged. police show up at his house. his wife said he's supposed to be taking medication for a mental illness. he's supposed to take the medication, doesn't take the medication every day. he doesn't eat like he's supposed to which exacerbates that condition. he was denied a concealed carry permit because of that criminal domestic violence complaint, and the arson charge. so you've got a picture that is emerging of a guy who you take a few s

at times, according to craig melvin, who was there, the governor appeared to wipe tears from her eyesd by several former governors of the state as well as family members of the nine emanuel church sheeting victims. members of the state highway patrol honor guard marched toward the flag. that's the same group that carried the casket of slain clementa pinckney. then with huge cheers from that crowd, after 54 years of flying on the statehouse grounds, the confederate flag was lowered. nbc's craig melvin is in lafayette, louisiana, for us this afternoon.e you seeing out there today? >> there was a news conference alex that wrapped up about 30 minutes ago. i spoke with a police chief about five minutes ago. the crime scene, the movie theater behind me going to be an active scene at least through monday. so perhaps on monday law enforcement will turn it back over to the company that owns the movie theater. also we learned that they are gleaning a great deal from these social media posts that the shooter put out there the shooter was known to several other agencies so the police department here in lafayette is now in communication with those agencies as well. in addition to all of that there was a stop by just a short time ago, former florida congressman allen west in town for an outdoorsman conference of sorts, hunters, fishermen gathering here in lafayette, they do it every year. but he was with ted nugent who has become a fairly well known gun rights activist. my friend and colleague, msnbc reporter asked the former congressman about
