president mendoza: commissioners, any questions? commissioner fewer. commissioner fewer: so patsy, thanks for your presentation in your report. she is an old friend of the san francisco unified school district. you bring up a really good point that although there wasn't a lot of parent involvement, there was not a lack of apparent concern. we hear this continually when we go out into the community, but they're very concerned about how their children are progressing and about how our procedures worked. we have a somewhat difficult system to an advocate. i hope that you will be actively engaged when we have the parent engagement plan rolling out, because the community group is part of the target parent group. we'll get better translation services and doing greater outreach to the community. i think i heard one estimate that 60% of the students are being raised by grandparents. yet to our reach to the caretakers. commissioner murase: a this wanted to point out that -- i just wanted to point out that president mendoza and i were at a presentation. there is

president mendoza: great. this meeting is adjourned. >> i am the director of visual arts programming at intersection for the arts. intersection for the arts is based in san francisco and has always been an organization that looks at larger social political issues through the lens of practice, and we are here today at our exhibition of "chico and chang." the original inspiration was drawn from a restaurant chain in new york city. half of their menu is -- what struck me was the graphic pictures and a man in a hat on a rig truck carrying take that time is containers and in the black sea to representation of a mexican guy wearing a sombrero and caring a somali horn. it struck me that these two large, very subversive complex cultures could be boiled down to such simple representations. chico and chang primarily looks at four topic areas. one of the man was is whose stories are being told and how. one of the artisans in the show has created an amazing body of work working with young adults calling themselves the dre

president mendoza: thank you. commissioner murase on the rules? commissioner murase: the rules committee met monday september 19 with three informational items. the first was a review of the policy for admitting non-san francisco residents to alice school of the arts. this was a question that came up from one of the previous board members on the policy on interdistrict transfers and i wanted to share two pieces of data. there was discussion around two pieces of data. first is the original admission policy approved by the board of education on october 23, 2001. and there are two provisions from that policy. one is that 10% of the slots for incoming freshmen would be reserved for students who demonstrate extraordinary potential as opposed to refined skill. and also the policy delineates that the school will limit non-san francisco enrollment to 10% with exceptions permitted based on low enrollment or requirements of certain departments. and the data we saw had non-san francisco enrollment as high as 16%, and so the committee has asked for additional

president mendoza: thank you. commissioner wynns? commissioner wynns: this past weekend, i was at the unity conference, of the latino school board members association and the coalition of black school board members. a lot of people -- they asked me about that, and i have a lot of interesting material. then i just wanted to say this, because i just got this. san francisco has been named number one in "barron's" magazine as the 10 healthiest cities for families -- in " parents" magazine. the city by the bay rose to the top of our list in part because of its gutsy move to bring healthier foods to schools. san francisco booted soda and high-calorie, empty food five years before the state did and was one of the first places in the country to push for school gardens. california's with whole grain breads debuted in 2007. now, at least have have them. skipping, it says san francisco also goes the extra mile to keep kids active, with playgrounds, recreation centers, and 60 soccer fields, and there are miles of car free roads during designated

president mendoza: any other reports on any of the committees that may have met? commissioner norton: i'm not reporting on a committee, but i did go see a bilingual community council meeting. i did not know we were doing this, but we have begun translating the annual test reports that all parents get in the mail. parents are getting them in their native languages which is a huge step forward. it has been a lot of work, apparently, but it was very much appreciated. i wanted to add my thanks, it is a big improvement. commissioner fewer: on october 19, i attended the school district's first annual lgbt family center. it was a smashing success. i think they thought 50 people would show up and it was packed. clearly next year, will have to have a larger venue. i would like to thank staff for putting this on. this was a fun event and i felt that everyone who attended had a great spirit, very family feeling, and i hope that next year we will have more families that will participate. at this time, i would like to make an appointment to my advisory committee. i would like
