bob menendez did survive the last-minute onslaught of allegations before the election. s he re-elected in november. it emerged lots and lots of news networks had been shopped this story about menendez and hookers. politico looked into it, did not think it was credible to publish. the "star ledger" in new jersey had, shopped that story. looked into it, found it not credible enough to publish. the "new york post" which i'm sorry is not known for its high standards of what it will or will not publish, the "new york post" was shopped that story about senator menendez. they found it not credible enough to publish. the ethics watchdog group "crew" in washington, d.c., said they'd been contacted by a tipster who called himself pete williams, not to be confused with nbc's pete williams presumably. they'd been contacted by a tipster who tried to shop them this story about bob menendez and prostitutes and wanted "crew" to be an ethics expose. they called the abc investigative unit to look into the story to verify the claims from the tipster. abc news like all these other networks

there is this corruption probe that menendez was involved in. then all these rumors circulating about these visits to underage prosta attitudes. and ultimately, the only person who, as i understand it now, is saying this is a cuban intelligence plot to smear me is menendez's lawyer. what's he saying about this? >> this is reported by our own evan perez, first by "the washington post," that his lawyer wrote a letter to the fbi asking for an investigation into this, because there were some, allegedly, some cia reports that, as you said, cuban government was actually potentially behind the leaks by an anonymous tipster about many of the things you just described, about menendez allegedly having dalliances with prostitutes in the dominican republic and so forth. there is an fbi investigation more broadly into some other things relating to one of his donors, but the big picture right now is that it is pretty clear that senator menendez believes there is validity to this and he talked to me exclusively about it. listen to our conversation. >> senator,
