the 2007 murder of the british student, meredith kercher, is what they were charged with.s radio's courtney walsh is live in italy with the latest on this huge story today. hi, courtney. >> reporter: hi, martha. well, it's been another dramatic turn, the murder trial of the british exchange student, meredith kercher. 28 1/2 years for amanda knox and 25 for her lover, raffaele sollecito. after 12 hours behind closed doors and four months of hearings in the retrial, the jury upheld the original guilty verdict for the stabbing death of kercher, who as you may recall was found half naked in a pool of blood in a house she shared with knox the night after halloween in 2007. as you said, today's ruling overturns the 2011 appeal that set the pair free after four years behind bars. neither were in the courtroom today for the verdict, though raffaele attended in the morning and then did not show up later, saying he was too stressed. knox remains in seattle, saying she feared being condemned again for a murder she did not commit. both knox and sollecito deny helping rudy guede to kil

knox is once again a convicted murderer under italian law for the murder of her former roommate, meredithher former boyfriend, raffaele sollecito also convicted again after a nearly 12-hour deliberation by a combination of judges and jurors. overnight italian authorities reportedly stripped sollecito of his passport near italy's border with slovenia and austria fueling speculation the 29-year-old may have been preparing to flee the country. he remains in police custody but is expected to be released later today. this was effectively knox and sollecito's third trial. first found guilty in 2009 then an appellate court overturned the conviction and released them before italy's highest court demanded this latest trial. knox, who learned of her newest conviction in her home said in a statement, "i am frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict. having been found innocent before, i expected better from the italian justice system. this has gotten out of hand." in an interview with guardian films aired by the bbc knox said she had no intention of serving the sentence. >> they'll have to catch
