metro decided it is indeed safe to reopen farragut north metro.shut it down yesterday for emergency inspection after a chunk of concrete fell from the ceiling, smashing into the platform below. kristin fisher joins us live outside the station with more on how things are going so far. good morning. >> reporter: much better for the commute this morning, mike. good morning. d.c. fire officials are saying that this was no small piece of concrete that was falling from the ceiling. they say that one of the chunks of concrete that fell was the size of a human head. you can imagine that would do some serious damage to someone if it hit somebody standing below. we've all been in the metro. you know how high the ceilings are. in theory, it could possibly kill someone. incredibly, no one was injured. and this station has reopened. that happened about a half hour ago. now, overnight structural engineers examined the ceiling at the station and determined it is safe for passengers. apparently falling concrete was caused by construction work taking place on conn

metro closed the station, citing abundance of caution. metro apologized for inconvenience. the riders didn't seem surprised. take a listen. >> that's what the metro does, right? we're kind of used to it at this point. i'm sure i'll get on a train, have to get off, then get on tomorrow, have it stop, the usual. >> reporter: again, metro says it wasn't their fault, it was the fault of construction crews working on connecticut avenue above the platform. still, for many metro riders, see it as the latest in a string of major metro mishaps. >> may not have been metro's fault, what was their response time when it first happened? >> reporter: it wasn't good. and it is causing a lot of controversy this morning. took metro about an hour to notify d.c. fire and police about the incident. that's a big deal because those emergency personnel needed to shut down this section of connecticut avenue because there was a fear that more vibration caused by cars driving over that section of tunnel, that more vibrations could cause more chunks of concrete to fall. that eventually did happen. the

yesterday, metro knew about the construction. ddot had a permit for it but the contractors dug too deep into the ground and caused a chunk of concrete the size of a human head to fall and land on a bench right next to the platform or excuse me, landed on a bench on the platform. incredibly, nobody was hurt. now the big question is, why did it take metro over an hour to notify emergency personnel? i asked that very question to peter benjamin just minutes ago. here's what he had to say. >> it's not clear to me that any passenger was ever in danger after the first incident occurred. in other words, the issue that happened here was construction above the metro station, which stopped immediately. as soon as it stopped, all of the danger stopped. it was immediately investigated and all of those actions took place that were appropriate, including sealing everything up. >> reporter: now, the other big safety concern discussed at this morning's meeting was metro's ongoing escalator issues. remember the incident on the national mall where

metro has 588 escalators in their system. the inspections, they say, though, will be completed this week metrgot a heads up about brake problems about a month before that incident at the l'enfant plaza station. a draft report by an independent contractor warned of potentially dangerous problems like warn bre pads and questioned the ability of escalators to stop. now tro's interim general manager says the problems are due to years of poor maintenance and that the issues should have been identified and fixed long before they were. now, as inspections mo rward they are going to be -- possibly taking more escalators out of serve. they're going to go escalator by escalator. take a look at the braking system. if they find any problems at all that could b dangerous those escalators will be shut down. at this point they looked at 405 of the 588 escalators. so they still have some work to be done. but they hope to have it all completed by the endf this week. back to new the studio. >> megan mcgrath reporting live. thanks very much. >>

metro is in the process of inspecting all 588 escalators. news 4's megan mcgrath is live at the west hyattsvilleetro stop with details. good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning, eun. those inspections ordered after an incident a couple weeks ago where an escator went out of control, began to accelerate abruptly without warning and injured several people. now since that plaza incident, metro has en inspecting all escalators in their system, and they've been looking, in particular, at the braking systems. now, those inspections have turned up widespread problems. there are 25 brakes that have been found to be faulty and have been replaced. 47 escalator are out of service now for repairs. there are a total of 588 escalators in the system. and metro says that they will be doing those inspections and completing them, all of the escalator inspections, by this week. metro got a heads up about brake problems a month before the incide. draft report by an independent contractor warned of potentially dangerous problems like warn brake pads
