metro decided it is indeed safe to reopen farragut north metro.shut it down yesterday for emergency inspection after a chunk of concrete fell from the ceiling, smashing into the platform below. kristin fisher joins us live outside the station with more on how things are going so far. good morning. >> reporter: much better for the commute this morning, mike. good morning. d.c. fire officials are saying that this was no small piece of concrete that was falling from the ceiling. they say that one of the chunks of concrete that fell was the size of a human head. you can imagine that would do some serious damage to someone if it hit somebody standing below. we've all been in the metro. you know how high the ceilings are. in theory, it could possibly kill someone. incredibly, no one was injured. and this station has reopened. that happened about a half hour ago. now, overnight structural engineers examined the ceiling at the station and determined it is safe for passengers. apparently falling concrete was caused by construction work taking place on conn

metro has 588 escalators in their system. the inspections, they say, though, will be completed this week metrgot a heads up about brake problems about a month before that incident at the l'enfant plaza station. a draft report by an independent contractor warned of potentially dangerous problems like warn bre pads and questioned the ability of escalators to stop. now tro's interim general manager says the problems are due to years of poor maintenance and that the issues should have been identified and fixed long before they were. now, as inspections mo rward they are going to be -- possibly taking more escalators out of serve. they're going to go escalator by escalator. take a look at the braking system. if they find any problems at all that could b dangerous those escalators will be shut down. at this point they looked at 405 of the 588 escalators. so they still have some work to be done. but they hope to have it all completed by the endf this week. back to new the studio. >> megan mcgrath reporting live. thanks very much. >>
