it looks like it will be a snowy morning rush metro northbound. relatively minimal impact on roads in and around town. downtown washington not much of a problem. south of town not much of a problem. all this should be changing over to primarily rain after about noontime today. as of now though, all these shaded counties north and west of the metro are under a winter weather advisory except for winter storm warnings from hagerstown out to frostburg, maryland. notice how the snow flakes pretty much line up where the shaded counties were. these snowflakes moving in to montgomery howard and northern anne arundel and prince george's county. this is literally the changeover line. coming right into downtown. again, temperatures are close to 40 degree this is downtown washington. 41 at national airport. but 35 in rockville, 34 in gaithersburg. it's not enough to freeze it solid on the roads, but it sure is cold enough to support snow all the way down to the ground. so if you're headed out this morning, rain and snow at the bus stops, all over the region.

we begin with that new information from metro. abc 7's stephen tschida joins us live from judiciary square with what's being done. stephen? >> leon welcome news to many metro passengers but also some troubling findings revealed today. now, the issue two months ago started when a jumper cable began to smolder and that awful smoke claimed the life of one woman. now, we also have learned that as part of these 10 issues these 10 safety actions, all 2,640 underground jumper cables were inspected. they were bound to have about 1% about 24 of them were also in the same shape that caused that fatal incident. now, to protect or to prevent this from happening again metro announced that it's going to be providing protective covers to these jumper cables and going to be changing to a low smoke variety, one that won't give off those toxic fumes. they're going to launch a new training and a number of drills for first responders.

developing now, gunfire inside a metro tunnel. new information about the man shot to death by police. he has been identified as 35-year-old bobby gross. the shooting happened near the potomac metro station. please are trying to determine why he was in the tunnel and what led to the shooting. >> investigators released a timeline of the offense, but it contains very few details and answers. passengers have a lot of questions, including what happened inside the tunnel that would make an officer pulled the trigger. d.c. police are investigating. the man who was shot was 35-year-old bobby gross but we don't know much more. the man was first thought -- spotted before 9:00 thursday night. he was only partially closed. passengers are asking if it was captured on surveillance video. >> there are cameras that would show what happened. i would like to see what led up to that point. >> he was confronted by a female transit officer and she fired her weapon. passengers are asking why. >> why would this officer i think they said it was a female
