joining me now is environmental protection agency minister, michael regan. thank you mister administrator for being with us tonight. of course, i want to get to a major announcement of the agency's new office of environmental justice and civil rights jackson mississippi where you are coming from live -- several residents followed a class action lawsuit against you. mississippi state officials including jackson mayor. it's an ongoing water crisis, even though the city ordered before u.s. has been lifted. our own nbc pierre they don't test enough to consume it. what is the epa response look like now in response to the crisis? >> well thank you for having me what i promised the people of jackson mississippi's at the environmental protection agency would be engaged in remaining gauged. a couple weeks ago i was convening with the governor in the mayor and i did with the residence asked me to do. they asked me to talk to the governor and where and stress we put the politics aside and find a solution. i'm back here in jackson today and we'll be meeting with the may

whether it's the administrator of the epa, michael regan, who speaks to me consistently, about their effort and desire to help. whether we're talking about the czar of the infrastructure bill himself, mitch landrieu, we've all been in communication. and about the timeline in which certain portals open, i think a major portal that is necessary to fund jackson opens in october. >> do you believe that, as you've said in the past, state lawmakers have been racist in their treatment of your city? >> yeah. well, i'll say this, i'm not backing down from any, you know, characterizations i have made. i think they were made in honesty. however, i think this is the time to focus on solutions for our residents. when people go long -- prolonged periods of time without water pressure and even longer periods of time without an ability to consume it, they really aren't trying to be bogged down in the political disputes that ensue. > understood. >> they just want solutions. that's where we're focused. >> understood. we will continue to track what is happening in jackson. good luck to you, mr. mayor.

michael regan, the head of the environmental protection agency, is heading to jackson, mississippi, today where a massive water crisis has left 150,000 without drinking water. while water pressure has been restored in the city, an order to boil water to make it safe to drink remains in place. this comes as mississippi's republican governor tate reeves is floating the idea of privatizing jackson's water, a move opposed by many. civil rights attorney sherrilyn ifill tweeted, "beware privatization." ifill is the former head of the naacp legal defense and educational fund, which has warned water privatization can jeopardize "the human right to affordable, clean water." temperatures in sacramento, california, reached 116 degrees fahrenheit tuesday, making it the hottest day ever recorded in california's capital as a record-breaking heatwave continues to scorch california. some cities have broken previous daily heat records by 10 degrees. officials urged residents tuesday to cut back on their energy use to reduce the risk of power outages during the heatwave as energy use soared to new highs. 4
