let's bring in michael steel, former state of maryland lieutenant governor, former head of the party,b bush campaign, michael. the numbers just out show -- i have a bar graph here shows he spent $5200 per vote in iowa, the most of anyone, and of course got the least reaction, least bang for his buck. the other night during iowa i asked lawrence o'donnell on the air, what happened to jeb bush? he gave a one word answer, trump. my question to you, is it that simple? >> it is. it's actually i would give a one word and make it trump squared. i think he got it both barrels from donald trump right out of the gate, took him off his game, made him visibly uncomfortable on stage with him, dye min ni diminished his argument and it has been since that time that jeb has tried to get his footing. i don't know. i guess the answer to the question of, you know, $5200 per voter in iowa is why? that is not a ground jeb bush had any footing on. this is the state he could begin to make that footing. certainly south carolina would be in play, even nevada. so there are a lot of things about the jeb bush ca

. >> joining us now, michael steel and stuart stevens. charlie, also with us.art stevens there's your former candidate there saying that he sees this path getting narrower. he's been on that path. he knows what it feels like. how narrow is it at this point? >> well, in a delegate sense only about 5% of the delegates have been chosen and you go this thing is still wide open. you have to look at the dynamic and the question that people keep asking is where is somebody going to beat donald trump and that ultimately is what this whole process is about.ç you have to win states. now you can lose a couple of states, pick up delegates and still do well, but you can't just keep coming in second and win through some sort of voting group. and i personally -- i've said this before -- believe that these candidates need to engage donald trump. i think that's the only way donald trump will be beaten. it's the only way that the obama campaign beat hillary clinton. i mean, let's remember in south carolina bill clinton in 0 '8 was reduced to saying he was not a racist. campaign

joining me now john rallston, michael steele.hn, to you first, what is on the line for the republicans? donald trump way out in front but does the party have to prove it can hold a caucus? >> they sure do. people may remember that four years ago tiny turnout about 7% or 8%. 33,000 votes took them two and a half days to count them. tonight they have paper ballots and taking pictures of the ballots with cell phones and texting them. the turnout is expected to be fairly low again. most of the campaigns don't think it will get past 40,000 votes i hear that returns will not be in until after 2:00 in the morning. and maybe not until 4:00 in the morning. let's hope those predictions are wrong. >> let me get this right. you are telling me they are going to have paper ballots and take an iphone picture and text that. i can't believe this is happening. it is 2016. why are we holding a caucus at all. >> i am very interested to see whether four years from now with harry reid no longer as powerful as he has been whether nevada gets early stat

we're joined now by bush campaign senior adviser, michael steele, the former spokesman for john boehnerning on no sleep at all. it was one of those nights for you guys. you were watching, at one point, it was 12, 11, going back and forth. >> it was a lot of -- a lot to watch, but the important thing is new hampshire as it often does, reset the race. governor bush is on his way to south carolina, and we're getting ready to start there. >> put you at fourth but not third, which i know you would have been happier with. >> we always want to do better, we always want to win. this is a result that resets the race and puts us in the right position going into south carolina where i think we're strong. >> is marco rubio damaged goods now? >> he's got to make the case for his record. and it's the problem isn't the kind of robotic recitation of talking points. the problem is he has no record of achievement. if you look at the things they cite as achievements, the hezbollah sanctions bill which passed unanimously and she didn't show up for the vote. the guys who said that he wasn't there. so what w
