. >> reporter: michaela i'm at the iraqi kurdish border with syria.'s a river in between and a bridge. we've seen throughout the past couple of hours that we've been here, a constant stream, now somewhat dwindled to a trickle, but it ebbs and flows of iraqis fleeing the isis offensive and they have taken this long journey to get here. they flee across the border to a kurdish controlled part. you can see these people stumbling up the banks of the river. they flow to syria where they are transported to this bridge and brought back into iraqi kurdistan. these people have fled their homes, quite literally in a matter of minutes. they are carrying little more than the clothes on their backs. we see -- have seen elderly coming, we've seen women leading their children, people look exhausted as they make this jurn in and they have nothing because as you go up the banks of the river from here, there are makeshift camps cropping up of tens of thousands of newly homeless people who have no place else to go. the kurdish border guards here, michaela, they say that

michaela, let me start with you. we were talking early e.r.ay i look at this from the perspective of a mother and we heard from the family yesterday, michael brown's family. they say this is victim blaming. they are very upset the police in ferguson released video that allegedly shows michael brown in that convenience store theft. but then at the same time said but it's not necessarily tied at all to his shooting and killing. what's your reaction here given what we have heard from the family? >> yeah, i mean a week ago almost to this hour we saw a mother in anguish saying that i was planning a graduation party and now i'm planning a funeral. that's burned in my psyche. we have to realize that under that body, there's a mother, there's a father, there's friends, there's a future. there's a complete community that's been terrorized. they saw their neighbor in the street in a pool of blood for hours. so that's trauma, right? and then you have all these other bumbling accounts from the police. and then i think also to find out that they were advis

michaela is off today. we want to get straight away to the breaking news. the cease-fire blown to pieces. now an israeli soldier in the hands of hamas. this started 90 minutes into what was supposed to be a 27 -- 72-hour truce. two israeli soldiers were killed, one was captured. shelling and rocket fire ejuptd between the two sides. health officials in gaza say an israeli attack in rafah killed at least 40 people and wounded more than 250. each side blaming the other for violating the cease-fire. right now, we want to bring in our karl penhaul who is live in gaza, also wolf blitzer joins us in jerusalem. karl, we want to start with you because gaza is the battlefield in this conflict. what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: it is a battlefield, john, and just as you've bringing me to air, i can hear in eastern gads the sound of heavy shelling. if you like, i can take a picture of that. i can see plumes of smoke on the horizon in east gaza. we were there this morning two and half hours into the cease-fire and at that point we saw a number of israeli tank
