they fight to win over undecided voters. >> good sunday morning, i'm rob nelson. >> and i'm michelle charlesworth. a father of five in south ozone park. >> eyewitness news reporter kristin thorne is live at jamaica hospital where we are learning the latest detailings. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, rob and michelle. family members of the man tell me that he is george tillman of maryland. that's who they identified him as. he was in town this weekend for a family birthday party. police have confirmed to eyewitness news that a gun was recovered at the scene. the shooting happened around 1:30 this morning in south ozone park around 116th avenue and 135th street. five police police officers we're told were involved in this. police are not yet saying how many of those officers fired shots. they are also not saying at this point how many times this man was shot. tillman we're told by family members was a father of five in his 30s. he was pronounced dead at jamaica hospital. here all morning trying to get answers from detectives. we just all come together as a family to find out what happened.

michelle charlesworth is in work well is the story. michelle. >>reporter: police are saying this was definitely an accident, but what a big mistake. the 77-year-old retired nypd officer fired this weapon by accident. there's a lot of questions about why someone would bring a loaded gun into a doctor's office. the unidentified 77-year-old retired officer was in dr. nelson's office when he fired the gun, according to police by accident. he was pulling it out of his he shot himself through the left and dr. nester was shot in the foot on long beach road in ocean side. should was to show the doctor the loaded and licensed 10 -- it was a 10-millimeter pistol. her doctor jumped in to help a woman says. >> dr. becky ran in there and tied the bandage around the guy's thigh. >> [indiscernible]. >> yes, because he heard the shot. he heard the shot. >> well, no charges have been filed in this as police continue to investigate. both men are here at the hospital. live in rock field center, michelle charlesworth, channel 7, eyewitness news. >> michelle, thank

michelle charlesworth talked to the family. she's in greenwich this afternoon. >> what a great move by this high school. this is a great family and family is led by example. there's going to be an intimate early graduation for this young man, his name is ferris, so his father can see him graduate high school. >> it's a huge milestone. huge. >> reporter: he's been through almost a year of treatments in and out of hospitals. he has gastric cancer which has spread to his liver. his days. his son and wife would love nothing more than to give him a chance to see his son graduate so they are doing it with the help of greenwich high school. >> i look at his achievements are my achievements. and i'm so, so proud of him. >> because of his prognosis he might not make it to my actual graduation, june 21st. so the high school agreed to have an earlier graduation this friday to watch me graduate. >> it was actually mom, denise, who made it happen. >> i'm a fixer and so is he. we've always been able to overcome and fix things. i feel help le

michelle charlesworth is there with more. kind of hard to believe, isn't it? >> it really is. pretty wild. but thank goodness it looks like these two men are going to recover. the gun was licensed. it belongs to a former nypd officer who's now retired but when it was fired it was loud and it was scary. they were very alert. then i heard he was showing the doctor gun and he accidentally shot him in the foot. >> reporter: business people next door and patients were rattled when they heard the gunshot. they were amazed to hear in a building full of doctors, one doctor had to help another after a 77-year-old patient showed off a pistol. >> he ran in there and tied the bandage around the guy's thigh. >> a tourniquet? >> yes. >> reporter: the retired nypd officer was pulling a .10 millimeter pistol out of a leather briefcase when he fired by accident and the bullet went through his leg and in to dr. matthew nester's foot. dr. nester is a podiatrist here. >> what about a podiatrist being shot in the foot? >> i know, it's ironic. >> reporter: no one else was hurt. it happened at 10:20

. >> and i'm toni yates in for michelle charlesworth. glad to have you back, and i'm glad to be here. we will see when the nastiness will roll out of here. >> reporter: i wish i could say we have major improvements on our way. we are looking for a serious change over the weekend. high wind warning has been posted, and we have showers right now but the next change up will be the wind warning. and careerry out there, and limited visibility where the rain is coming downright now, and temperatures are upper 40s to low 50s. much of the day will be in the low 50s for the five boroughs. across the board, it's a high wind warning in effect until 2:00 p.m. then the winds will settle down. the impact of the winds, we will have had rain in place to sort of loosen the soil and make for weaker holding down of the roots, and then we have wind coming in that could gust up to 60 miles an hour. anything that is not tied down, you may want it secured. the high resolution futurecast, showing the wind comes after the rain and this is starting to taper off.

i'm michelle charlesworth. new details on that school bus fire that happened in merrick, nassau county. officers say a driver and 10 children safely escaped these flames, scary pictures, though. the bus was stopped at a light at merrick avenue in lakewood. the fire appears to have started in the engine, spread quickly, scorched the front of the bus. nobody, again, was hurt. >>> new york city lawmakers will hold their first vote today on whether or not to restrict costumed characters and topless paibilitied women in times square. the city council's transportation committee will vote on a new set of rules for pedestrian plazas throughout include the busy tourist section in the crossroads of the world. the full council is expected to vote on the bill tomorrow. >>> let's get a check on the commute with debbie duhaime. hi, debbie. >>reporter: hi, michelle. thanks a lot. over on the f trains seeing delays still downtown because of ongoing switching problems at 179th. metro north, new jersey transit, lirr on or close.

. >> i'm toni yates in for michelle charlesworth. >> good to have you back in the saddle. >> good couch time. and meteorologist amy freeze has your weekend weather. >> good morning to both of you. just looking at the numbers, high of 61 just after midnight, go down in the history books. from here on out, temperatures cooler, most of the day in the 50s. winds picking up significantly. we will start with the temperatures right now, north and west of the hudson valley, temperatures near 50 degrees, and that's where we are through the afternoon and down the shore, look at the winds. funneling in from the east and some from the west. the northerly wind will overtake want wind today. the strongest of the winds could come overnight. anything that you don't have sort of tied down or secured on your properties accident make sure you have that taken care of. there's a drizzle left for noon. winds are gusty. could be dangerous and damaging as well. heads up for that, and an artic air mass arriving tomorrow that

i'm michelle charlesworth. are you? >> you two under a good mood. mother nature's delivering all weekend long. yesterday, we had mid-60s. we do better today and even warmer yet as the days move forward. beautiful blue skies looking outside. dozens with middle to upper 40s is what we've got in brooklyn to lower manhattan right now. as far as the eye can see, it's wall to wall sunshine. we're going to look for a day that turns out to be just a bit warmer than yesterday. out on the island, 50 degrees. down the shore, we're at 43 for brick. new has 48. we've got 50s already showing up for poughkeepsie and sussex. i see no reason why we can't make it past the mid-60s. very few clouds. 59 by noon and 68 the forecast northeasterly wind throughout the day today will keep the south-facing shores and some of the coastlines a little cooler than everybody else. if you are headed towards the
