joining me now is "the new york times" columnist and msnbc contributor michelle goldberg. always good to see you. i know you have a new piece in "the times" today calling on senate leadership to force menendez to step down. i wonder what you think the calculation is for senator chuck schumer, the majority leader in the senate and why he has not called and insurered the ouster. >> i'm not sure. >> i've called on him to demand menendez to resign. i'm not sure he can force menendez to resign, which may be part of his calculation. if he's trying to ease him out behind the scenes, maybe that's understandable. i'm heartened three or four senators who had called under menendez to resign, it's now close to have the caucus, but it really should be all of the caucus. this is such a black and white issue. and, yes, you have the right to a fair trial but do not have the right to a seat in the united states senate when you cannot answer for such deeply incriminating evidence against you. and the answer he's given at that really defined press conference are just so laughable. >> yeah, a

and michelle goldberg at the near times is still with us.n, how bad is this story compared to all the other clarence thomas ones that reported on this year? what do you want viewers to take away from this one? >> yeah, well, i think it adds a new wrinkle, and as you mentioned, we've been talking about how, reporting about how justice thomas's life has been in recent decades, subsidized by a number of wealthy, political donors, including harlan crow, the vacations and tuition, other gifts. but this is really different, because it's not purely a vacation. it's a justice thomas making undisclosed trip to a political event and fundraising event that is for the koch network. what we reported is that the justice took a private jet trip out to palm springs california a few years ago, january 2018, where he spoke at a small dinner for high dollar donors to the koch network. it's significant for a few reasons. one is, like the rest of what we have been reporting, he did not disclose. it this was done in secret. but also, judges are not supposed to be
