it's wednesday, may 13-th i'm michelle griego.look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. >>> this morning it's still unclear as to why an amtrak train derailed in philadelphia. at least five people were killed and more than 140 were injured. northeast regional train 188 was headed from washington, d.c., to new york last night. brian webb is in philadelphia at the scene. brian, what's the latest? >> reporter: well anne-marie crews have lit up the entire area so that they can work through the night. they aren't quite absolutely sure that everyone is accounted for, and like you said, they aren't exactly sure what caused this crash either. we have seen police and fire crews come and go throughout the night, some of them carrying heavy equipment in and out of the area. even saw some members of a counterterrorism team here although there's nothing to suggest that it was nothing other than an accident at this point. all seven cars were off the tracks. those who got up close say it looked like tin cans. some had to crawl

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone.rank mallicoat. >>> several major traffic closures could cause headaches over the long holiday weekend. kiet do explains why it a mess getting around. >> we are live at the san mateo bridge. caltrans plans to shut it again starting at 10 p.m. tonight. this is exactly like the last closure that happened just a few weeks ago. going eastbound it will be closed from foster city boulevard westbound closed from clawiter road. this full closure will allow the crews to resurface the entire span of the bridge and replace an expansion joint. they will replace the existing electrical cable system and transformers and do some other minor electrical work. on to some major bart closures. the line between fruitvale and coliseum stations will be closed all day saturday and sunday and then re-open monday at 8 a.m. the line between fremont and daly city will be closed all day just on saturday. a free bus bridge will be available but bart warns it will add significant travel time. this is all for some on

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm not frank mallicoat. he is off tomorrow morning. he will be in next week. we shall see. >>> several beaches in los angeles county will remain closed all morning because of a mysterious tar-like substance that washed ashore. and at least growing criticism regarding the oil spill off the santa barbara coast. anne makovec has more from the newsroom. >>> reporter: insufficient, that's what california's senators are calling the response to that oil spill in the santa barbara area. they are questioning why it took an hour and a half for the pipeline company to even notify emergency officials that there had been a spill. that happened near goleta on may 19. crude spilled down a culvert and into the ocean off the coast. it left beaches black and created a slick 10 square miles into the pacific. california senators are now asking the feds to give more details on the response by the company, plains all american pipeline. now, farther south, beaches along the los angeles county coastline remain closed as the coast guard investigates balls of t

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:00. and we begin with a pair of accidents under investigation this morning. four people are dead after a car went hurtling into a creek east of girl roy and across the cub -- gilroy and across the country investigators are sorting through the wreckage of an amtrak derailment. kiet do joins us live from gilroy with the latest. >>> reporter: a tow truck just went down there hooked up the tow line to the axle of this vehicle pulled it about 50 feet up the embankment. they loaded it on a trailer and it's removed from the scene. they have opened up leavesley road. we are live here just past a new road here just outside of gilroy. it happened at 11 p.m. last night when chp says the car was driving eastbound on leavesley road. the driver skidded rolled down the embankment several times. someone heard the crash and called 911. investigators say there were 5 people in the car, three women and two men. all appear to be under the age of 30. everyone died except for the driver. he was taken to region

. >> and i am michelle griego. developing news in the east bay.rch has ended for a stolen car suspect who led police on a wild chase and crashed. police believe the suspect escaped. kpix lisa chan joins us live from near the site of the crash on hurst avenue. lisa? >> reporter: yes. the chp went door-to-door in this neighborhood searching every home and every yard you, but they did not find the suspect. you can still see the dark skid marks on the road where this crash ended. it started at 11:30 last night in concord. the chp received a call about a suspect? a stolen honda accord driving the wrong way on the freeway. it grove drove in the slow lane and on i-880 and drove through nine cities before crashing here in berkeley. at one point the suspect called 9-1-1 and told the dispatch that he did not want to go back to jail. >> he related he knew the police were following him and that the helicopter was above and that if the helicopter would stop following he would then stop his car. because of the public's safety, the hospital continued following h

i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:00. >>> a viral video shows san jose police officers using physical force to subdue a suspect and now questions are being asked whether it was excessive. kiet do is at san jose police headquarters where the officers' actions are defended. >> reporter: good morning. at one point 25,000 people an hour were watching this video on facebook. it is now up to nearly a quarter million views. san jose police have begun an internal investigation over this clip. the clip is dark and shaky lasts 3 minutes and has a lot of yelling in it. take a look. [ sirens ] >> reporter: it begins with two police officers holding a suspect on the ground. then more officers arrive and appear to kick and beat the suspect with their fists. and then hit him with batons. in the background witnesses are heard telling the officers in spanish and english to stop hitting the man. they continue to plead on camera with the officers saying police are here to protect us. san jose police said the man in the vid

. >> i'm michelle griego.rain -- [ signal breakup ] [ please stand by ] [ no audio ] >> reporter: this happened in between the west oakland 12th and lake merritt stations. that's the cross where all trains converge. getting around it was a mess. people had to switch trains and get around and endure long delays all day long. the problem was a broken component of the mechanism that switches the train. >> their initial preliminary findings is that something struck this receiver coil and damaged it. we still don't know what. it could be a train, a maintenance vehicle, equipment, crew members, so we need to figure out exactly what struck this coil and damaged it. >> reporter: bart crews found the problem right before the peak morning commute in the early-morning hours until about 9:30 this morning tried to fix this piece right away. it made the morning commute a nightmare. the fix took longer because of new bart safety protocols for workers on the tracks. they had to make sure the trains weren't near them while the

good afternoon, i'm michell griego. >> frankfrankie -- frank mallicoat. investigators are at the scene of a deadly plane crash near livermore. you can see the debris and wreckage spread across the field. the only identifiable part of the plane is the tail. it is a short distance away from where it looks like the plane hit. it left concord at 8:45 bound for reid-hillview in san jose. when the plane failed to arrive in san jose, the pilot's family alerted emergency crews. the pilot is the only known occupant of the plane. he was killed in the crash. and as we continue to look at these pictures, we are joined now by sergeant jd nelson with the alameda county sheriff's department. this plane was reported missing last night and just found this morning. who was searching for it, can you tell us? >> yes. our search-and-rescue teams were out here last night. based on the information we had, the plane wreckage is located between pleasanton, hayward and castro valley. so it's a pretty remote area. and not too easy to see economy you have no light at all. no one rep
