good afternoon, i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. clean-up efforts are under way at a homeless encampment in north san jose. as kpix 5's keit do reports, this encampment was set up in a very strange place. >> reporter: we have never seen a homeless encampment like this. first, access is difficult because the only way to get there is off the freeway. it's huge. nestled in between interstate 880 and highway 87, it stretches more than a quarter mile along the sound wall encompassing nearly 20 acres. crews say 40 to 50 people have scattered away and they are calling it the jungle part 2. this is the third day of the clean-up and caltrans has already removed 150 cubic yards of mattresses, shopping carts and appliances. the workers say they are nowhere close to being done. some of the squatters are skilled electricians. look closely and you can see the cut wires where they sliced into high voltage electrical lines stealing electricity to power ovens and refrigerators. what's more neighbors say one of the homeless stole a drone delivered to

i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat.ome breaking news out of livermore. residents have heard gunshots near pacific avenue and dolores street there. kpix 5's anne makovec is at a very active scene with the very latest. anne what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, we know that this is all in the main area of the city of livermore. city hall is very close by. the police department is within a mile and downtown but now we do have a block or two actually of pacific here at dolores blocked off. you can see those police cars. they are at the end of this blocked off scene right now. we don't know much about what happened. we did see these reports on social media about gunshots being fired in this area. we do know the coroner is on the way which means that at least one person has died in this shooting and no officers have been hurt. so we're waiting for a sergeant with the livermore police department to give us details which should happen before the top of the hour and we'll keep you posted. no estimated time of re-opening pacif

i'm michelle griego. >> i'm frank mallicoat.:00. >>> and we begin with developing news over in the east bay where a body was found in front of a fire station. oakley firefighters found the body in a parked car in their station driveway around 7:00 yesterday morning. investigators say the car wasn't in a crash and while they don't suspect foul play, the man did have blood on his shirt. firefighters say the car must have been parked sometime between 4:00 and 7:00 because they didn't see it when they headed out for an earlier call yesterday morning. >> coming into work this morning, i saw the police cars here. i thought maybe somebody had crashed into the station. i have never seen anything like this in my 15 years here. >> contra costa county sheriff's office says the man was 51 years of age, they are waiting on an autopsy report to learn exactly how he died. >>> well, it is a morning full of delays for anyone who travels between concord and oakland on bart today. track work between those stations is still underway and passenrs

i'm maria medina in for michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. 5:30. >>> san jose residents get a chance to speak out about a homeless housing proposal. kiet do is live at the empty lot where the city hopes to give nearly 200 homeless a second chance. >> reporter: good morning. you know, for years, people were telling government leaders to do something about the homeless crisis. well, it looks like something is about to happen here at this empty lot on evans lane. this butts up against almaden separation in the communications hill area of san jose. this used to be rv and boat storage but it could soon be transformed into so-called modular shelters. the lot itself is huge. it's got room for up to 170 people. the county plans to award the contract soon. however, detailed plans have yet to be finalized. one idea that seems to be gaining momentum are modular individual units that have locks and are 100 to 200 square feet with access to shared bathrooms and kitchens. the city may also allows every allow couples and pets. the site

michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. we begin with breaking news in livermore where neighbors say they heard gunshots near pacific avenue and dolores street. kpix 5's anne makovec joins us live at the scene with the very latest on the police activity in the neighborhood there. anne what can you tell us? >> reporter: really limited information this morning. we know that there were gunshots, that one person has died. the coroner is on the way to the area, which as you mentioned is at pacific and dolores. so we have a couple of blocks of pacific right now cordoned off by police as they continue their investigation. we also know, good news that no officers were injured in the shooting. but we're waiting for a lot more information. this is not common in livermore. this is a very quiet city and this area that we're in right now is very close to the police station, downtown city hall all within one mile. so as people start to wake up and move about this morning, a lot of people are asking us what's going on. we're waiting for o

. >> and i'm michelle griego. happening in san francisco a federal civil rights trial begins over the fatal police shooting of alex nieto. jackie ward is live where so many people are passionate about this case, jackie. >> reporter: that is exactly right, michelle. and it's been almost two years since police killed alex nieto but dozens are still angry. the parents are suing solve pedestrian and -- sfpd. at the time of his death, he was a city college of san francisco student eating lunch at a park and police say he had a stun gun on him. the exact events leading up to the moment police fired off dozens of rounds into nieto will be argued at trial. >> the san francisco police department killings have been happening is a lot of the information gets oppressed. that is what we're aparade of. that is what we are working on now. to get all of that information out. >> reporter: his death was the first in a recent police shootings. protestors are expected to be here at 8:00 this morning and the trial gets under way at 9:

. >> i am michelle griego. a dangerous chase came to an end this morning. the timing couldn't of been better.>> reporter: it was a combination of fate, luck, physics, and bad choices that brings us to the scene and walnut creek. it looked more like our rescue than a police chase. it all began around midnight when lafayette police got into a chase with a bmw on highway 24 eastbound with speeds up to 140 miles an hour. after officers broke off the chase, the car took off on 680 southbound and loss control. the car went down an embankment, hit a tree, then went airborne, flipped over the fence, then straight through the parking lot where it ended up inside the building. guess it was parked where i'm standing right now? and ambulance clue. -- and ambulance crew. they saw the whole thing. dave style says the crash sounded like a dinosaur coming through in miss them by 2 feet. his first thought... >> that i'm going to die. it was really quick. i was glad to be alive once they went by me. i told him to stay calm, we're going to get him out. that's really the best

i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego.w 6:30. >>> a mud slide is being blamed for causing a train derailment in niles canyon. >> it was chaotic. the ace train was going from san jose to stockton when it derailed near sunol in alameda county. kiet do reports. >> reporter: police say it was crazy last night. they had to wade through the creek waters with temperatures in the 40s so a crazy chaotic scene as they rescued people. the sun coming up and we have a better look at the scene. the train is still partially submerged in the alameda creek. workers are removing the cars one by one and removing them. there are five cars total. this is the front of the train. it's laying on its side still in the water. we have new information this morning that the train hit a mud slide that also contained a tree. not a lone tree like was initially reported last night. the mud slide came down after two days of heavy rain that loosened the soil. this crash happened at 7:30 last night on the "ace" train 10 from san jose to stockton. this is a m
