the incident was caught on video and michelle miller is working the story. michelle. >> scott the video surfaced this afternoon and apparently shows a white police officer shooting a black suspect in the back. the officer michael slager says the man was stopped for a broken tail light and then according to the officer the man took his stun gun. in the video it appears that the man reaches for the stun gun but then turns to run away. the police officer shot at the man a total of eight times. he says he feared for his life. according to the mayor of north charleston the police officer is in custody and is being charged with murder. the victim is 50-year-old walter lamar scott of charleston. we will continue to follow this story, scott as it develops. >> michelle, thanks very much. now, to california's historic drought. with 10% of the u.s. population and half of america's fruit and vegetable production, california is hitting a harsh reality. today, the state said that february was the worst month for conservation since last summer. families weary of mandatory c

michelle miller is following this. >> wow. >> reporter: the back-to-back eruptions of which chile's mount calbuco less than 24 hours of each other came with little warning, forcing the evacuation of nearly 4500 residents. a state of emergency was declared. hiker waldo flores was trapped on the mountain. "i tried to stay above ground," he said. "the explosions were frequent and very strong." dramatic video shows clouds of gas billowing nine miles into the atmosphere, creating an amazing display of lightning. that ash came back to earth, covering homes and vehicles. but scientists are watching closely for a different reason. volcanic gases have been shown to have a cooling effect. the massive eruption of mt. pinatubo in 1991 lowered global temperatures by as much as one degree but they say even smaller eruptions like this one in chile can also make a mirror. >> reporter: allegra legrande is a climate expert with nasa. >> once these gases make it to the stratosphere, they're converted into particles that alreadily reflect the sunlight and prevent the sunlight from coming into the earth's sur

michelle miller is in manhattan with efforts to capture the potentially dangerous animals.ing. >> reporter: good morning. the coyote we saw this morning seemed to feel right at home. he took a stroll through this park like any dog would, moseying on up the stairs and crossed the street. that coyote police are still looking for. but we're seeing more and more of these animals here in new york city as they're learning to live and thrive among us feeding off of our garbage and our pets. coyotes live all across north america. but in recent years they've migrated outside their normal habitats into new ones even adapting to the urban jungles of manhattan. wildlife officials have clocked an alarming number in boroughs. this one scampered across the roof of a queens bar. this one avoided the largest police force who have been searching by air and on the ground. >> we've been kroeching into the natural habitat, so coyotes have been looking for other sources of prey to what's been normal for them. >> dave salmoni says they're becoming less afraid. >> normally they're nervous and skit
