microsoft kind of lost their way in my mind. now, you look at it and the beta release they had yesterday looked pretty strong. so i think with looking forward a year from now, they're going to have windows 8 out. server 8, which allows you to run, you can run the same applications you're going on your pcs more or less. biggest problem with my ipad is i can't run excel, big spread sheet. if you have a windows 8 pc or win phone 8 tablet, you should be able to do more things with it. >> with the refresh cycle you're talking about with microsoft -- doesn't that help hewlett-packard? should we carry that through? >> i think so, but here's the problem, you're going to have a stall in front of that. then the question, are dell and hp the ones that are going to gain share. we haven't talked about my bullish stance on semiconductors or disk drives. here's the problem. this product cycle helps them, but the fact that lpeda went bankrupt, the fact you had floods in thailand, the fact that panel production is getting cut tremendously, there

where are we with microsoft?u seen the beta version of windows, do you think it is the catalyst you said it was going to be way back in the fall? >> yes, that was september and the stock was probably around 24 or so. and my observation was everyone dislikes the stock. even my cab driver doesn't like it. the sentiment was set up well. and we saw a lot of new products coming that will be out later this year. the most important is windows 8. and i was just in barcelona, two days ago, and saw the preview of the product. i think it looks very good. but the observation i would make is that most people still dislike microsoft. they think of it as apple versus microsoft. and that's true for probably 25% or 30% of the market consumer oriented with ipad. there is another 75% of the market where microsoft has a lot of strength. and they're showing up to the game, with the product that offers touch as well as ability to use office. it will create an upgrade psycho. >> for an ordinary joe, what is windows eight got that will

microsoft positioning its windows 8.0 as the so forth wear answer to the ipad.o far the reviews have been god. john ford is looking at whether a strong ipad debut will crush the stock surge. do you think it will? >> it has been something interesting i wanted to look at. we know the mania traction is the ipad. it is worth thinking of the follow-on effects. i was at a conference with a bunch of cios and a couple of things were clear. wynn doughs 8.0 is a consumer product first and two in some ways it works best as a tablet product. the early buzz could be affected by how it stacks up against the latest ipad. it will make money no matter what. to are it to outpace expectations, particular will i this year, giants to have to sell tablets. two things to look out for, how dramatically apple raises the bar as far as what software on the ipad can do. what are the apps preloaded on a new ipad? how much better has siri gotten? it will define what they expect to be able to do with tablets what's the price of entry level ipad? if they go to a $400 price point that hurt wind
