the joplin tornado was part of a line of storms that swept across the midwest. it spun off twisters from oklahoma to wisconsin. today the same system threatens the deep south and the mississippi and ohio valleys. the storm destroyed whole neighborhoods in joplin, knocking out power and phone service. the search for victims continues throughout the night. a state of emergency is in effect. the national guard has been activated. and fema officials are working with state and local agencies. joel brown has been tracking the storms overnight from washington. >> terrell, good morning. damage is just so overwhelming that people there are having a hard time even describing it. after an early report out of joplin, missouri, that at least 24 people had been killed, city officials quickly warned that they feared that the number could be much larger. the trail of destruction stretches for miles in joplin, missouri. dozens are feared dead, after the massive tornado tore through this town of 50,000 sunday, leveling entire neighborhoods. >> one minute it was just barely sprink

this is a seasonal pattern for the midwest. looks like it'll be record flooding levels there as a result of a combination of the heavy rain and severe snow melt. >> we do have pictures of the mighty mississippi this morning. all eyes on that river, people bracing for more massive flooding from the midwest to the gulf coast communities. along the mississippi river, they're facing the possibility of evacuation. one area of the river near memphis is expected to crest at 48 feet this weekend. that is 14 feet above flood stage. record river levels, some dating as far back as the 1920s are expected to be broken this weekend. >> new this morning: three sailors are waking up safe and sound after their boat hit some rocks along the san francisco bay. coast guard and san francisco firefighters sailed up to a jetty next to the golden gate yacht club, hit some rocks across from the marina green. all the sailors were wearing rife vests and nobody with injured. >>> the city of san jose is bracing for more cinco de mayo celebrations. the home

not shaping up well at all as a monster storm rolls through the midwest.e faa has implemented a delay program for chicago o'hare. that's the only official airport that's getting this official delay program. they say that the average delay is going to be four hours and 14 minutes. chicago midway and detroit also reporting unspecified delays. dallas/fort worth as we mentioned and possibly delays in oklahoma and missouri. here at bay area airports sjc has cancelled two flights to dfw, one was supposed to go at 6:20, the other at 8:40. another flight has been delayed to chicago midway as well was supposed to leave at 7:40 now pushed back to 8:15 but double- check that. sfo no cancellations so far. but they did cancel and delay three flights overnight. oakland, nothing just yet. so airline employees are coming online now as the morning goes on here at san jose and all the airports across the bay area. definitely you want to double- check your flights before you head out. >> because there is no bigger drag than having to wait at the airport. that's for sure. kie
