mike inouye is looking at how this closure is affecting your morning commute. mike, how is it looking? >> we are going to start, however, we are going to start with christie smith who is live along 280 in san francisco. let's get to her first and we'll check in with you in a second, mike. you are there. you can see the activity under way. what should drivers know? >> good morning to you. well, drivers are going to have to know that southbound lanes of 280 are closed through the long weekend. they're just going to have to find another way to get around it. while all of this is seismic safety work is going on and that's what you see happening here behind me. what they're telling us is that about 60,000 drivers use the southbound lanes through san francisco each day. what they're doing is replacing hinges that are about a foot below the roadway. they're outdated about 50 years old and caltrans says no one uses this style any more so they have to replace them. so, until tuesday, neighbors, people in town to see a giants game or carnaval or students home for the holi

you really want to stick around for mike inouye's report. he has a couple things that could slow you down. stick around for that. also, want to make sure your ac is ready to go as we're getting into that time of year where we get the hot stretches of weather. ten degrees warmer than yesterday. as we head through tomorrow, we will peak. we're talking about maybe 105 degrees down in gilroy. that's what we are watching for. better chance of down south in hollister and keep you updated on that. for today, this is what you can count on. temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s and we have a full moon on the way tonight and because it's so clear out there and because we don't have any off shore flow, you will be able to see it. just glorious already and commroco completely full as we head through tonight. all your inland valleys and everywhere except for the immediate coast and you can see why temps are hot today. 95 degrees in the south bay and 94 along the peninsula and 95 degrees in the east bay and 86 in san francisco and 95 degrees out in win

here's mike inouye. >> temperatures fantastic in the roadways. the roadways, i wouldn't say spectacular through dublin and a live look shows you just past el charr appuiohave a lot of company and we show you the map. we have the slowing around the dublin interchange and not so severe as we sometimes see on a monday. after a tough start i was worried about it. south 680 shows some slowing dipping below speeds as you head towards sunol. your commute eastbound for 580 and we have a stall reported in lanes and it was a little distraction and now things back out to the typical pattern and reports of metal in their lanes and sheet metal. watch for crews to clear that. south of there, though, we're looking at 680 northbound and 101 between 680 and 880. traffic flows very smoothly. a live look showed us a smooth drive there through san jose and through foster city no problems off that san mateo bridge. hold on to this for a couple seconds. from time to time we saw this traffic shaking. keep that in mind here as and no big issues for your commute, guys. b

welcome in our own mike inouye. >> a great note. remember, memorial day is not just a holiday for many businesses, let's go out here towards the roadways, folks with the change in direction. northbound is moving smoothly and southbound i saw a little slow down and a car pulled over to the side and that cleared and so did anybody who was distracted. the north bibound side, i was watching over here. reports of a crash approaching that 680 interchange and i don't see any slowing and no flashing lights and chp will track that. tri-valley and a little slowing towards that dublin interchange and we're seeing a little slow down and an earlier bit of debris in the roadway and that cleared without incident. the leading edge of most of your traffic coming up towards the isabel interchange there. a smooth flow of traffic for 880 and picking up a few more folks and red blip eastbound and let's look at the live shot out there and i don't see any problems. don't see any slowing through the area and construction crew on that side of the bridge and

right now, let's check your drive, here's mike inouye. >> not so bad.ubtle slow down over here for the tri-valley. the haze and the low clouds drifting around the bay as christina talking about and so far your drive right here on the road deck itself. censosensors out of livermore a report of tire debris in the roadway and no traffic reported but we do see a smoother drive once you pass through the area heading past that dublin interchange where the build started right at 680. approach to the bay bridge walnut creek interchange and moves very smoothly right now. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza shows you the cash lanes on either side of the fastrak lanes that are building up. that is atypical and we usually see the fastrak lanes build up. we'll see that and we'll track that, as well. east shore freeway clouds just showing up in that shot. bay looks really nice and nothing unpredictable and the south bay. typical overnight road crews 880 around the alameda and we're talking about a smooth flow as far as the transit systems go. no delays reported,

here's mike inouye. >> traffic flowing past the coliseum right now, you do have your overnight road crews and one in the north bay. as we look at the access coming in across the golden gate bridge. further north highway 37. across the golden gate bridge with a smooth flow of traffic in towards san francisco but highway 37 is still closed between highway 29 and bellejo. >>> we'll turn to breaking news. firefighters monitoring a camp for hot spots after they put out a grass fire earlier this morning. it happened at what is called the jungle. at first crews had a hard time getting to the fire but once they did, they were able to put it out pretty quickly. >>> also new this morning, we have police in san jose spending much of the night canvassing the area after a stabbing happened near archer street and michigan avenue. officers say the man had been stabbed at least one time. he was taken to the hospital. we've been not told of his condition this morning. now the suspect has not been found or even identified at this point. investigators say they're still looking for a motive. >>> not even sum

let's bring in mike inouye. and this closure is going to have some effect. in fact, it already is, mike, as things begin to bog down. >> scott, that's whatwe we're seeing right now. we expect at 11:06 on a friday to see a backup. but let's look at the live sensors for our maps. we have a slow drive across that span. the backup getting into the city very popular, but this is slower than we typically have. there was an earlier incident at treasure island, westbound, but that has long since cleared. getting into the city, getting off of the bay bridge in towards southbound 101, picking up all this overload as folks avoid that approach of 280 that christie smith was talking about. now, anywhere south of cesar chavez, if you get on south of there, you're just fine for southbound 280. let's look at your best bet, though. to avoid the area altogether, but if you have to go that way, here's some suggestions for you. caltrans says southbound traffic, you can detour 101 we just showed you, but surface street traffic, mariposa and 18th street, very tough getting there.

mike inouye has a look at where you might want to avoid if you're in that area. >> south bay map but it does have our traffic sensors and i'll circle and where the fairmont is located and you see 280 takes you conveniently up the peninsula over towards the lower peninsula part and mountain view and i call it the south bay and you let me know what you call it. mountain view where walmart is located and take surface streets as likely highway 85 and that will tie up the end of your morning commute. talk about friday with lighter drive and that will be at the very end when things are starting to clear from the south bay. this area through mountain view, as well. that's where moffett field is. you're going to tie up 101 and 85 or 237. the same area that actually took place yesterday. about 4:30 when the president arrived into town and theded over towards that first event. we're watching that area anywhere north of that, the palo alto and no worries, guys, we'll track it and send it back to you. >> stay with nbc bay area for continuing coverage of the president's visit and live updates thr

we'll talk about that and right now bring in mike inouye. he has a busy job. >> yesterday evening's commute, judging by the sensors and my wife's complaints getting home, it sounds like a lot of folks were shuffling their commute a little bit. hitting the roadways and making more local travel. looking at the bay at the glowing lights and christina talking about the changing conditions of fog coming in and the mist may be an issue. at least visibility is okay there. in the east bay still waiting for the full clearing of this van involved in a crash earlier eastbound 580 away from the maze towards the 980 connector there. now, no real slowing but seeing more cars hit the road and countercommute, a big issue. getting out of the city, a big issue and here is a full closure for southbound 280 from sixth and king all the way down towards pennsylvania avenue. pennsylvania is your local surface street and alternate to that. that will get very crowded later on in the morning and surface street traffic is not so bad. you heard in christie smith's stor

i'll tell you all about the thunderstorms coming up in my next report and right now welcome back mike inouye and check out our monday drive. >> looking out here westbound through 580 towards dublin and well past el charra and further back on 580 you know they have the wind farms and the wind advisory from chp extends this morning for gusty conditions across those hills, keep that in mind, it happened overnight and they still haven't cleared that. this live shot is where the arrow is approaching the dublin interchange. little slowing at the cluster where things move around and not a big deal for dublin. farther north, the slow lane reported blocked. north 280 there that was blocking two lanes and still blocking the slow lane by the activity and may be why we're seeing the slowing on the approach and coming through the construction zone on san ramon. slow for caution sake, of course. it is as you approach 101, though, reports of a stalled prius in lanes. be careful there. sounds like it's still blocking one lane and only a couple there at that point. a smooth drive south and watch the rest of

let's bring in mike inouye. can we expect our own obama jam here? i guess if you're stuck in traffic, you have a lot of time to tweet. >> hopefully the copilot will be doing some tweeting. we want no drama obama. hopefully that will be the hashtag or something similar. if you look at highway 101 here, it's possible he's going to take a helicopter from this airfield to los altos, his destination, first one, but if he travels by car, here's a look at how his commute could be impacted. moffett field, air force one touches down just before 4:00 at 3:50 this afternoon. then the president heads to los altos for a roundtable meeting. highway 101 is right there by the airfield. we have 85 and 237 in the area. so he starts at moffett field to start his trip, and you know, highway 85 and 237 complete that triangle. he'll have to take surface streets over to the los altos residents in any case. later, the president will leave los altos and head to a reception at the fairmont in downtown l.a. we assume 280 will be the most convenient route, probably the one he'

right now, let's say good morning to mike inouye. >> you're talking about the moisture in the air and a crash in the east bay and let's take you first to look at the example of what you're talking about. the low clouds and moisture all over the place. we're talking about the possibility of slicker roadways and not a major issue right now as traffic is pretty light and the flashing light in the center of your screen that's westbound and we have the crew as you head over towards the tower and eastbound also has maintenance overnight and blocking one lane, i think, still heading out of san francisco. now, over in the east bay we have eastbound 580 at 980 right there at the connector reports of that crash they're trying to clear one of the vehicles from the roadway and there will be a little slowing from the flashing lights. a van over on the shoulder there. be careful at the transition. meanwhile, the commute direction to the bay bridge moves smoothly over towards san francisco. what is not moving at all is southbound 280 from 6 all the way down towards pennsylvania, basically considered

always scrolling at the bottom of your screen and basically hot at the coast and mike inouye, what are you tracking? >> i'm tracking the issue for the tri-valley right now, christina. so far not much of an issue with the commute just a gentle build through livermore. countercommute northbound 680 no slowing approach 84 and that report cleared from the chp report, as well. watching no slowing and watch for any activity on the shoulder, as well. southbound side moves smoothly past 84 down through fremont and into the south bay. over here 880 which is slowing. dunbarton bridge towards stevenson and a crash reported on the northbound side but look at the traffic pattern and looks like on the southbound side as chp arrives we'll get more information and watch both directions for slowing 880 at stevenson and through fremont already and then clearing by the time you reach dixon landing road. the rest of your south bay and northbound route starting to push for 101 northbound to the airport and over here 87 and 85 and a slower drive developing there. along the peninsula, no major problems. here

wouldn't you agree, mike inouye. >> more clothes for bay to breakers and a kids area, so, keep that in mind. check out the website, as well. carnaval in san francisco. the big alarm here for folks heading south through pleasanton and sunol. eyes on my gravel and dirt spill and backup out of pleasanton and highway 84 just south of there and right where our camera is where the spill is. our camera shows us a slower drive and can't see the activity, but just past this camera because everyone slows up approaching the scene. chp will stay there as we get back to the maps until the sweeper trucks arrive probably about 6:45, 7:00. another half hour until they can start to clear some of those lanes. they will have to close off a couple lanes at a time and 680 big delays and consider heading through castro valley and 680. 101 northbound which has a lighter flow of traffic throughout the rest of the south bay, as well. san jose up in towards the airport. that's the only slowing we see right now and a smoother drive around the rest of your bay. 880 and castro valley and why you might want to use

right now, let's check your drive and say hello to mike inouye. just north of 280 and 680. north 101 from capital expressway and pretty gentle, pr and as you head into downtown, got that out. smooth drive there, as well. i'm looking at cupertino because an earlier crash 85 at 280 and no drama there. slower drive for west 580 and south 680 folks come around the bend and into sunol and that's where we're seeing the gathering now. expect some slowing as we head down through fremont after the golf course you see more folks around washington boulevard. smoother drive approaching the bay bridge and slower drives southbound 880 as we get over here. a crash that has moved to the shoulder that set off slowing out of hayward and san leand row a crash at davis and watch for more slowing as you head south from 880 in oakland. building the volume through downtown and bay bridge toll plaza will look like this on their speed sensors and filled in all lanes and the metering lights are on and sun in your eyes as you get off the bridge from san francisco to oakland. >>> 6:33. an iraq war vet

let's check your drive and say good morning to mike inouye. >> peninsula camera zoomed it in here.ou see this big rig and out of lanes and on the shoulder and watch as this other box truck exit really tight as you get off the off ramp. that will start moving, once again. traffic is flowing and that was convenient timing. northbound 1 o1 right there at the willow avenue offramp. southbound side showed a little slowing. very light traffic and no problem. slower senseries and that's why you have us to double check everything that the computer spits out. a nice flow of traffic despite the construction crews overnight. 880 around 280 and continue there and typical pat frrn the south bay. rest of your bay moves pretty smoothly and no major delays and zoom in to the tri-valley and leading edge heading towards isabel and no problems here. south through sunol and 680 north heading towards walnut creek and over towards 24 that crash reported with activity near wilder and the tunnel moves smoothly in both directions and the bay bridge no problem as you approach there and we'll get a look with
