you can follow him at mike inouye. >> and there's an app, you can get them delivered. >> you have all the answers for me. >> he can get you through traffic and your hunger spell, everything. >>> vianey has the weather. >> i feel like it's a little tricky with the system because people are saying, wait, it's barely raining. it's coming, i'm telling you. let's talk about where the heaviest of the pockets are right now. it's ramping up. you can see it right here just off the coast. but eventually this is going to move north to south, bringing with it some gusty winds. now, we are also expecting to see some of these cells begin to pick up, notice right here san francisco we're starting to get moderate rain. everywhere else the rain is pretty light. i wanted to turn your attention toward right here, you can see this activity picking up. if i kind of make this timestamp for boulder creek, notice it really starts to pick up at around 5:57. as the heavier cells move through, we're going to also see winds begin to pick up. that's another thing i'm very concerned about. i want to help you time

>> i let them know who mike inouye is. >>> it's been a lot going on here.ot another strong storm coming in, and it's moving a little bit closer. let's talk about this, because you've probably heard a lot, bomb cyclone, no, we're not making the term up. it's an actual meteorological term to describe a storm that intensifies rapidly over the course of a short period of time. now, so far, we've seen this storm -- how we measure, it's really intensified to about 17 millibars, meaning the pressure is dropping even more. we're getting it get more organized. and we've also seen the winds increasing within this, as well as some thunderstorms developing. then we also have the tap into the deep subtropical moisture coming all the way across the pacific, so the storm track is enhancing the amount of rainfall as that moves into the bay area. so we're seeing widespread rain for the north bay, and that's where we've seeit really starting to pick up th more widespread steady rain, as well as some of the more gusty wind. stormranger showing pretty much all of the north bay

for a closer look at the closure, let's bring in mike inouye.how do drivers need to get around this? >> they can't. that's the problem, marcus. they have to go over the bridge which is damaged by that slide you saw. the problem is they will have to go this direction right here. this is where the morning commute comes in and that's why they are using the morning to close the additional lane, and they will go over the area slower, and in the afternoon it will build up. that's why they are trying to clear it by 1:30, because that's when the afternoon and evening commute kicks in. >> prepare for extra time? >> absolutely. out of tracy, out of livermore, out of sunol and the interchange, that would be the direction. for the morning, we are looking at the opposite direction, and that's moving fine out of the altamont pass. east bay, we do have slowing but the good news, the traffic break and the full blockage has cleared to two lanes now, and that's opposite your main commute. you are down two lanes over at beaumont and 14th, but that crash has moved

we want to start with the breaking news on the bay bridge, and mike inouye has been keeping track oft has not changed at all. >> no, but this is a moving picture. you can tell, this out of oakland, basically avoid this because of police activity over on the san francisco side. take you to the maps. you see the massive backup. the metering lights are cycling but are not really having an impact because the volume of traffic backs up through berkeley into san francisco. only two lanes are blocked and that means only three lanes are open and that will not clear until the police activity clears. shifting traffic north towards the richmond bridge and towards the golden gate is one alternate. more traffic heading south across the golden gate bridge towards san francisco. kari, south of the bay bridge, you go to the san mateo bridge as an alternate. this in the last three minutes really started to crawl despite the fact that we have more pleasant weather, but we have a lot more traffic. >>> it's not windy and no rain is coming down, and you can head out but expect it to be slower as a result

we bring in our own mike inouye. mike, this has been going on for several hours. >> it's a pain. right? the reason is because half of the freeway is blocked. >> right. >> look at the map closer up. you see the southbound side. look how slow it is coming up from 7th street down to just about fruitville. you notice coming over from the island of alameda where the sign says emergency repairs, that's slow through 280. south of there things open up. you notice the speeds that have drawn down that past high street, you're back at the speed limit. that's southbound. but it's jamming you up all morning starting at about 3:00 this morning. repair work for the hole in the overcrossing, 880 to had a freeze warning issued. there's a hole in the road and they don't want stuff to drop through below. so they're repairing it and can't reopen until that's clear. now, things are a lot light sore you're just going past the scene likely seeing a lot of actiity past the freeway. southbound still jammed, maybe till 1:00 or longer. slow drive from 980 past fruit veil. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >>>

chris sanchez is live in the south bay, and mike inouye tracking those driving conditions. >> first we want to get better timing of the storm. vianey arana is tracking it for us. how is it looking? >> we're seeing that the system is starting to move on to, you know, away from the coast and on land. we can see where the biggest impacts of the storm, and yes it's a little bit further south. this is good news for us. unfortunate for southern california, they are going to get the brunt of the atmospheric river. we can't put our guard down because we're going to see the gusty winds move in. you can see santa cruz is about to get some of the rain moved through there. you can see it on satellite and radar. those heavier pockets of rain will intensify in the next two hours as well. catching light to moderate rain through santa rosa, san rafael, fairfield and concord as well, down through the south bay, a little bit starting to come down in san jose, and here's just off the coast, that's going to start to make its move inland. overall, here's what we can expect. the storm is moving in, but the

we want to check in with mike inouye. you're tracking that issue. what are we talking about? >> let's clarify what you guys just reported. if you're just waking up, we're looking at 880. 880 itself has reopened. i posted that update at 11:45 last night, both directions have reopened after yesterday's mud caused all that flooding yesterday. this morning there is flooding reported at the stevenson on ramp to northbound 880. the on ramp is currently closed. nearby is the thornton on ramp that's open. we're looking at 880 itself. with that type of problem rearing its head on our reports, and it's calm right now, we're looking at potential issues. the reminder that whatever problems we had over the weekend, prepare for those coming ahead. 880 is open, but the stevenson boulevard on ramp is closed. we had 84 closed in this area of unincorporated san mateo county. if you know where alice's restaurant is, it's south of there. little blochs of green, that means damp roadways. a crystal clear view of the traffic flowing smoothly across the bay bridge. the crystal clear might not last f

. >> vianey arana is timing it out for us and mike inouye is checking out the traffic.today in the bay streaming live online. >>> i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm marcus washington. this morning, flood watches are prompting communities to take action. this is for the rain arriving. for a better timeline, let's check in with vianey arana. the storm is going to stick around? >> we are not talking about a low pressure system, but a moisture tap known as the atmospheric river or pineapple express. we have the rain developing on satellite-radar. if i zoom in using the doppler radar, we have the rain moving through the north bay. it will start out light to moderate and quickly becoming intense. the atmospheric river outlook means the moisture tap stretching from hawaii. that is why it is referred to the pineapple express. a boost of the rain rates per hour. a lot of rain coming down all at once within the hour pan. especially for the mountain areas. this is a integrated water vapor transport. how much moisture and how long it lasts depends on the tap. this is the system that is movin

. >> let's bring in mike inouye. what do drivers need to look for? >> from the middle of the day, like you said, laura, they will be down two lanes, and it's opposite your morning commute. i think that's why they planned the timing, obviously, through the area. hopefully it's clear by the time the afternoon and evening commute kick in. we will watch that and update you if anything delays that. meanwhile, westbound coming into the area, this is a commute direction, and we are showing you the build. this is not the end of the repair work, but it's shifting lanes so they can repair for the repair work that has to continue there. you expect slowing for highway 4, and of course, at the bay bridge toll plaza. now there's the build coming through richmond and into berkeley. everything else moving smoothly, but an issue northbound 101, there was a distractiona roadside brushfire. we are sorting this out for the early commute, and then the south bay commute will kick in in another half hour. >>> there are a few high clouds passing through. let's get you ready

here is today's top stories, including mike inouye monitoring a big problem for a lot of drivers headingive from about 7th all the way down past fruitvale, so over three miles of stretch where you're going about 4 miles per hour. it takes you about 45 minutes to get through the jam. you can use international or eastbound 580 to get past the emergency repair work blocking two lanes. this may last all morning. so avoid that stretch of the nimitz if you can. >>> i'm kris sanchez. before you head out to take the kids to school, you'll want to know that power outages are shutting down several school campuses around the bay area. fremont union high school district is canceling class at five campuses, cupertino union is canceling classes at 16 middle and elementary schools. all classes are canceled at de anza college and san jose unified says school is in session. you can find a running list at nbcbayarea.com. those schools are among the 167,000 customers that still had no power as of 4:00 this morning. the bulk of those are in the south bay and on the peninsula. >> time to get a look at the fo

mike inouye is here with what you need to know before you hit the roads. >> good morning., basically between 380, the airport, and whipple avenue down here, that stretch, we've seen the signs overhead. they're taking those tolls. you have to have a fas trak flex transponder. if you don't and chp nabs you, that's a pricey ticket for that violation. get that, even if you don't use the express lanes now, you might need it during congested times. congestion into san francisco because of a crash, there may be two between candlestick and the 280 interchange. the bay bridge does have the metering lights on. the backup is slow, typical spots. like a typical friday, lighter volume. >> we're starting out with some more clouds coming in. we will have another cold start, and then trending toward a milder day, with some peeks of sunshine. we're also getting ready for weekend rain off and on, starting tomorrow morning, and as well as some lower snow levels down to about 2,000 feet. if you're going to the sierra, there is another winter storm warning with 1 to 4 feet of snow just this we
