. >> mike martin with the city office of economic and workforce development. good morning, thanks for coming in today. i want to follow up sort of the prior two speakers by saying a lot of our focus today was on taking a step outside of any specific step forward or announcement to give a preview of what is coming this fall. from our perspective i think we've started to see the pictures of what this event is coming together on the water and i think it really sort of symbolizes what we are feeling at the city in terms of putting together the rest of the want picture. when we say the rest of the event picture i think it goes beyond what is happening on the day of the events. but it is things like how we are going to approach the economic benefits, secure those for san francisco in a way people really wanted to see them. how aware going to move ahead involving the youth of san francisco and bay area. how are we going to approach putting on an event of this scale in a way that is in the san francisco way. we have heard clearly over the course of this year what it m

mike, the white house must be pleased with these job numbers today. we heard the president cautiously expressing some consideration, but they must be delighted. >> well, i think that they are, but no one, martinver since the first year, the first spring that we went through here, when people started talking about green shoots in the economy. obviously, that didn't happen. what has ensued is an ever-rising unemployment rate, getting up near 10%, at one point, it has steadily dropped. but each month, the news is just incremental. it ticks up a tenth of a point, goes down a tenth of a point. a drop of 4/10 today, certainly a big deal here at the white house. still very cautious, saying the economy is healing, but there's a long way to go for 13.3 million people still out of work. the president appeared earlier today. he was with president clinton, as it happens, talking about one of his green initiatives under the we can't wait rubric. but the president used the opportunity at the top of those remarks to sort of riff off of the jobs numbers and push for that bill extending the payroll tax cut. by the white house estimations, if it is extended for at year, it would mean another million jobs. and
