nbc news white house correspondent, mike memoli, along with george solis on the ground in south carolina where the recovery is happening. george, let me start with you there in south carolina. any progress? are they pulling any of this stuff in? i know there's a desire to recover what they can from this balloon to assess what capabilities were on it. >> yeah, good afternoon, that is the million dollar question. we know right now thanks to a briefing from a u.s. general, we know there are diverse in the water with robotic equipment. we know it's about 15 football fields by 15 football fields wide. the pentagon said the debris fell in 42 feet of water, and the recovery should be fairly easy. we now know there are two navy vessels out there, one categorizing the debris, and the other mapping the ocean floor to find more. we know security is a big part of this. there are three coast guard cutters, along with u.s. military aircraft providing security, and we know the department of defense is working with the fbi and local law enforcement to collect as much debris as possible to get some intel

nbc's mike memoli is following this for us. mike, good morning. what do we know?> well, jose, obviously we've been following this situation for multiple months now as president biden's first his personal attorneys and then fbi investigators have discovered classified documents at various locations tied to the president. but this is significant because this is the third search now that we're aware of that the fbi itself has conducted. the first was in mid-november. we confirm that one just yesterday. it was at the penn biden center, the office president biden used when he was out of office. then of course on january 20th, a more than 12-hour search of the president's personal home in wilmington, delaware, which we learned about just the following days, and now nbc news is confirming that this search is underway actually as we speak, jose, fbi agents were seen arriving at his home in rehoboth beach, delaware, this morning, and we're told in a statement from the president's personal counsel that bob bauer, that this search is being cone with the full support and coop

we're learning more about what president biden is expected to mike memoli is back with us. tle bit ago about the dynamic tonight where we have a new republican congress and the president's walking that fine line challenging them, but also inviting them to work with him. and the white house just laid out some four key areas where he's going to be building on that unity agenda he laid out last year, where he thinks republicans can work with him to help millions of americans. the first area is on mental health, specifically asking congress to ban targeted advertising directed at young people. the role of social media is something we have been focusing a lot about. another area is on fentanyl addiction. the president going to be talking about ways he hopes to combat the flow of fentanyl, he called it the plague in america, which includes calling for tougher action from both china and mexico to try to do that. he's also going to be asking congress to work with him again on areas of -- helping america's veterans, one, expanding housing for homeless veterans and also working to pre

nbc news white house can't mike memoli joins us with more. , what are we to make of this most recent search? >> reporter: given this is the third location that has been searched by the fbi, one of the questions we've been posing to the white house, are there additional locations that might be subject to an fbi search. let's take a listen. >> i think we're providing information as this goes on and answering questions of the search activity as they've been happening. i don't want to speak too much to the doj's practices. as is appropriate like we did today, if we have information to share about activities con dubtd, we will do that. >> harry, maybe it was better to say didn't answer the question posed to him. we know in a statement from bob bauer, the search lasted about 4 1/2 hours, far less than the 12 hours the search of his wilmington ton home lasted. it's notable that they didn't find classified documents but did take again some handwritten materials which we understand may have classified information. there's a discrepancy here that's goin

. >> yeah, our own mike memoli has just confirmed this, chris, according to a source familiar with this decision that the secretary of labor marty walsh, somebody who has been a part of the cabinet from the very beginning, is going to be departing the administration to lead the nhlpa, the national hockey league players association. this is something first reported elsewhere in the hockey world that mike memoli has been able to confirm. it is something the white house and the department of labor haven't provided any statement on. but it is notable because this is the first sort of statutory member of the cabinet to depart the administration. we had seen incredible cohesion so far and it is rare in the two-year mark to see this many cabinet level members still sticking by. sometimes they sign on and say i'll do the first half of the first term, but then i'm going to go pursue something else. i think this is the first cabinet member that we're seeing of the original makeup of the cabinet, we should point out president biden did elevate somebody who led the science and technology office to

joining us now nbc news white house correspondent mike memoli and our global security reporter dan de luce as well. mike, what new information stood out to you? what did we learn about the downed objects? >> one of the big questions as we have been tracking these new unidentified objects from over the weekend is why all of a sudden have we shot down now four objects from the sky, where nothing of this sort happened before. the president did offer a bit of an explanation for that. he said as part of the review he ordered early in his administration to study surveillance tactics, they refined radar capacity that led to better detection of the many objects that are now in our skies. and as part of that, they detected there was a potential threat with three of these objects more recently, two potential civilian aviation. now, as part of what we heard from the president in terms of steps moving forward is that he ordered his administration, the national security team in particular, to better establish an inventory for what is in the skies, to establish some rules of the road for how to dea
