mike. an overnight shooting in oakland left one person dead and another injured. we want to get the details from christie smithood morning. >> reporter: good morning. we moved around the corner to give you is going on in east oakland this morning. eight hours after this officer-involved shooting, investigators are still on the scene. kern avenue is still blocked off. they are waiting to tow two cars out of here. deputies just told us they were here because one person has died. we are trying to get more information on the circumstances of that. here is what we know. officers were called to kern and school streets around 10:15 last night. may have gotten word something violent was going to happen here and spotted two cars they believe were tied to the two people they were looking for. two shot, a third suspect ran into a backyard around here. oakland police had to use helicopters for several hours to locate them. they tell me they recovered several weapons out here. as for the two officers, they are okay. oakland police telling me they should wrap up their investigation out here fairly soon. reporting live in oa

mike. >>> teachers, parents and students are hitting the pavement this morning in an all-day protest for budget cuts in education. christie smithve with more on the protest. are they showing up? they were tardy at 6:00. >> reporter: about five of them and growing. they have a lot of support out here. people honking for them. these are teachers. i have been speaking with the head of the united teachers for richmond. what they are out here for, what they want lawmakers to do is avoid further cuts to education. they are asking lawmakers to extend temporary taxes to help pay for it and restore education funding. this is in advance to funding next week. in richmond, for instance, what they are telling me is class sizes ballooned. the school district suffered under $18 billion in cuts. they just can't take much more. >> teachers have, for the last three years 30,000 teachers have been laid off. we have lost 30,000 teachers. okay, we could lose 20,000 more teachers. so, the budget cuts are causing devastating affect in our classrooms and on our schools and on public education. >> reporter: they shavay $4 biln more would really cut esp

mike. good morning, everyone. we begin with covering a house fire where people sustained injuries. we want to check in live with christy smith. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you a. crew is boarding up what's left of this home. it's not much. about 50% of it is a loss this morning. i just got off the phone with the chief. when they arrived, flames were pouring out of the doors and windows. an 80-year-old woman was suffering from burns, but expected to be okay. how did it start? from what they can tell, she was tooking on the stove and fell asleep. it's when the kitchen caught fire. that was 2:15 this morning onned monoton way. it took 18 minutes to knock down. firefighters telling me it's unclear whether there were working smoke detectors in the home. all things considered, the woman is expected to be okay. no firefighters injured in this. we are told arson investigators are done and won't be back here today. the fire is considered to be accidental. reporting live in concord, christy smith, today in the bay. >> thank you for the latest there, christy. now for the latest on the other day's news, we want to check i

mike. we are following a strange case of violence in the east bay, in oakley. an arson investigation is under way after a domestic dispute. christie smith joins us with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it is quite noisy in the neighborhood. there's been a crew out here for a couple hours boarding up the home. there literally is no roof left. upstairs you can see that. the first firefighter saw smoke and flames coming from the upstairs. they immediately requested a second alarm to this house fire on bay view drive. it took more than 30 minutes to gain control. fortunately, nobody was home at the time. a neighbor was telling a story of some suspicious activity here of someone removing appliances earlier. we are trying to check into that now. a major concern here is as the home was burning, the one next to it, they are so close together, maybe seven or eight feet, the flames were dangerously close to catching others on fire. crews put up a screen to protect the other homes. the home has major, major damage. fire investigators expected to be here at daybreak to try and determine a cause. reporting live in oakley,

mike. >>> we are following a fire that investigators say they are looking into and neighbors in oakley, they think it's suspicious. we want to check in with christie smithhe is live with the details. >> reporter: fire investigators are expected any minute to comb through this home to figure out how it started. i can tell you, it's gutted and the roof is gone. we are on bay view drive. there are strange circumstances here. the fire started about 11:00 last night and took an hour to knock down. i spoke with police this morning and they said there wasn't much inside the home. it's unclear why it burned so long. no one was home at the time. they say they have been called to this home several times before on domestic violence incidence. neighbors say the man has been at the home acti ining strangel removing appliances. we spoke with one neighbor abdomen the fire. >> i heard glass breaking and i don't know if they were arguing or what was going on and my wife looked through the window and saw the house next door was on fire. >> reporter: police tell us that they were in contact with the man who lives in the home. he's cooperating with them. they are waiting f

smith, "today in the bay." >>> it's 6:06 right now. another round of storms in the midwest killed 13 people overnight. the weather channel's mike seidel is in piedmont, oklahoma, with more. >> reporter: it was another deadly day yesterday and last night another tornado outbreak. the preliminary counting is 36 twisters and at least nine people have been killed by these tornados. we're in piedmont northwest of oklahoma city where the tragedy unfolded live on tv yesterday. not only here locally but on the weather channel. we can show you some of the damage this morning at first light. here's one of the brick homes. you can see it's been hit pretty hard. the car port there, the roof covering up the suv, but you can see piles of bricks here. look down the street here, now all these homes brick. so we're thinking this is going to be at least ef-3 if not ef-4 damage. basically nothing is standing. we've got a few trees that have been debarked, cars flipped over, cars just in piles of rubble. so this is going to be at least ef-3 or ef-4 damage winds, easily over 150 miles an hour. no more severe weather here but the cleanup gets under
