[siren blaring ] >> reporter: those are the tornado warning sirens blaring right now. the good news about that we were told earlier in the day. i can show you the siren that is wailing right now. we were told that was knocked out by the last tornado. i'm hearing it at the moment, it's working. we do see people outside, we still see cars driving around. people are very concerned about this for all of the obvious reasons. you've got tarps on a lot of roofs, if this really does kick in, if we see any kind of heavy winds develop the tarps on the roof won't last very long. there is also already a lot of debris laying around here. everywhere you look, in fact you can see the debris laying around. directly behind us here, this is the strip mall that took that direct hit from the ef4 tornado. there is a ton of debris that can go flying around here. now just as the sirens have really been wailing for a

mike tobin live again tonight harrisburg, illinois. are seeing there, mike. >> all of this destruction, shep, happened in a flash. this truck out here delivery truck for appliance store. the catch is it's in the showroom of the appliance store right now not out in the parking lot. this what i'm standing on is a support column for the strip mall in which that store was located. over here you have some of the metal structure that held it in place. none of it stood a chance as 170 mile-per-hour winds. the mayor out here says some 300 homes and businesses were destroyed and his primary concern tonight is for the people who were in those homes making certain they have a roof over their head, shep. >> shepard: you speak of concerns, mike, they must be mighty concerned about the new round of storms heading their way. >> specifically to this area it looks a little bit better. it looks like there is going to be rain. it could get colder on hand and turn to snow. the worst of the weather will be south and east of here, shep. >> shepard: mike tob

mike tobin in henryville, indiana. check in with mike tobin, first. >> rick, everywhere is a profound scene of destruction. this house the roof the house was blown off. the location is right across the street from the henryville high school where students were sheltering in place. the local emergency authorities say this is proof that the air early warning system worked because of all of the people sheltering in the high school only one person was killed. i want to show you amateur video out of pe pekin indiana where you can see the funnel cloud forming in the sky and reaching its fury and reaching down toward the earth and cutting its path of destruction. we now know from the national weather service debris was pulled some 5,000 feet in the air before it was deposited. we also know as the tornado was working its way along the ground four people on that particular scene were are killed. marysville indiana. wiped out an entire town. back out here live you can see the power crews restoring power engaged in what is now th

i want to get to mike tobin. he has been covering the storms throughout the region and is on his way now to henryville, indiana. that's a rural town about 35 miles north of louisville. known as the oldest state forest and birthplace, of all of things, kentucky fried chicken founder colonel sanders. the national weather service is reporting what it calls extreme damage in henryville. mike tobin on the way. what do you know? >> you got this remarkable phenomenon that the national weather service just referred to as multiple vortex tornadoes with unique weather wr system. i was in 70 degrees in short sleeves one minute. weather system moves over me we have got on heavy coats and bundled up. i'm on the back side of the storm system where all the bad weather has just moved through. the issue right now is a lot of wind on the back side of the -- of the storm system. as far as reports of damage and whatnot, we have got reports that people are trapped in the rubble and henryville, marysville as well. but none of that can

mike tobin with the news live in west liberty, kentucky tonight. ow us what's there, mike. >> well, i will tell you, shepard, when those tornadoes touched down, they spared absolutely nothing. this was a calm neighborhood. children played here on the street. children were raised in that home behind me here. the care-free country nature of this neighborhood changed in an instant when a tornado appeared on the bluff. we have shown you main street now cluttered with debris from all of the different buildings. the mayor here says there wasn't a single structure spared. some 8300 structures in all sustained severe damage. they are all probably destroyed, shep. >> shepard: have people there been able to make any progress in the clean up efforts? >> you know, progress is hard to define this early in the game. but some temporary municipal offices have been set up. so people can get some basic city services restored or at least they have got someone to ask questions. we have seen a lot of people returning to their homes to go through their belongings, salvag

mike tobin in henriville, indiana, elizabeth is in harvestville, indiana and marine molina in the extreme weather center. mike in indiana, mike, what's the situation there? >> well, kelly, everywhere you look there's a remarkable story, a remarkable scene of destruction, take, for instance, this school bus, this was a school bus that was getting students home when you first got the report that bad weather was on its way. because of the bad weather, they couldn't get all of the students home, so they returned to the henriville high school. as soon as all the students got on the bus, got shelter inside of the high school, the tornado hit. and this bus was across the street. look at it now, it was tumbled across the road where it sits in the front of a house, none of the students on board it when it went into this house. we have amateur video to show you, of indiana, you can see the funnel cloud forming in the sky in the shape of a cone, slowly, but surely reaching its way to the ground and then touching the ground and cutting a bath of destruction, and understand the seriousness of this, yo

mike tobin is live in the hard hit area in kentucky and the late breaking news headline, we have lostngel. >> reporter: yeah, and little angel babcock, the girl found alone in a field separated from her family, we have learned that she has been taken off life support, she had some very severe injuries, including head injuries, and shortly after she was taken off life support, she succumbed to her injuries. she now joins her motherer, father, brother, and sister who perished in an instant when that ef-4 tornado came upon them, harris. >> harris: you know, we ask this question whenever disaster strikes like this, how are people coping and i know there's a lot of support out there. >> you know, it's really remarkable, harris, to he see people pulling together, particularly he we noticed out here in east bernstadt kentucky, family and friends were putting a tarp on the roof. his home is no longer structur structurally sound, but wanted to protect it. and this is where he hid and despite losing the house says he feels lucky. >> i thought it was all over. >> really? i bet you did. >> yeah.

mike tobin is in kentucky with the latest hi, mike. >> reporter: hi, heather. residents here say they have seen tornados and big storms skip along the mountaintops before. but this is the first time they saw a tornado hug the hills and go into the valleys. that is why you see all of the debris altthe treeline there, the overturned cars, the school bus out there, the overturned suv and all the trees that were brought down by the force of this storm. something else we have seen here, the communities pitching together to try to rebuild, rebuild hathey can. we found the home of charles eversol, drivewayed, at least structurally in the course of the storm, while he and his family huddle inside. people are putting up a tarp on his roof to try to preserve the belongings inside, with bad weather predicted. despite the fact that he lost his house, he says he feels fortunate. what do you think? >> i thought it was all over but the crying. >> reporter: really? i bet you did. >> yeah. >> reporter: you know, you seem like you are pretty upbeat to me. are you a guy who says,

bill: mike tobin leading coverage. it is early for tornados especially in that part of the country. good morning. >> reporter: in this part of the country it is early to have all the warm weather. you see people walking around in shirt sleeves in warm weather but there is downside. the cold air rolled in. that is what happens when you get the cold air and warm air colliding. it whips up tornados. winds now estimated at 135 miles per hour. that tornado spent about a half hour on the ground and cut a path of destruction about 10 miles long. more than 100 homes were damaged. at least 13 homes were taken right down to the ground. that wasn't the only tornado in southeast michigan. monroe county, another small tornado on the ground. that was three to five miles. winds estimated 70 to 90 miles per hour. another small tornado columbiaville. similar path of destruction, bill. bill: did they have much after warning, mike? >> they never do. witnesses on the ground heard sirens for a couple of moments. they had an opportunity to seek shelter. again you get the stories of people seeking shelter

mike tobin is live in harrisburg with a scene to show us this morning. mike, good morning. >> reporter: well, bill you mentioned the 170 mile-an-hour winds. this is what 170 mile-an-hour winds do. two days ago this pile of destruction was a strip mall. look at this truck over here. this was a delivery trucked tipped up on its end. the payload section ripped open like a sardine can. it is not in the parking lot. that is the parking lot. the winds picked up a couple days was the front of that strip mall. this isn't flimsy construction. this is wooden frame but stone facade you seen as you drive around in the midwest. look off in the distance. you see some power crews out in that direction, restoring power. you see some of the homes. you see some of the homes that are intact. my read on that is as tornados come through and they bounce along this is where the tornado cut its path of destruction. off there in the distance where the tornado bounced back up and stopped destroying the homes. bill. bill: we've seen the homes ripped off their foundation. was there

mike tobin is in clintonville, wisconsin, west of green bay. official just spoke a short time ago. what was that? >> well, they said, shep, on tuesday night, wee small hours of tuesday morning, i should say the company had enough equipment in place to determine at 12:16 a.m. what they had out here was a really, really small earthquake. 1.5 on the ricter square. one seismologist says to his knowledge it's the smallest earthquake ever recorded that anyone ever noticed. what they noticed big booms in the middle of the night. the reason for in this area of the country sits on top of granite. granite is really good in terms of conducting the sound. that's why people heard all the booms. as far as the other events or the boomings at night, they have to assume that was part of a swarm of earthquakes. what they lack out here that they don't lack out west is all the equipment that you have in place where you have an active earthquake area and also whether you have a small earthquake you don't have the needles jump all over the place like it happens out
