minnesota is home to 11 sovereign tribal nations and large indigenous populations. i met with tribal leaders to hear challenges of their communities. in 2019 i held a state-wide listening tour on housing issues and as part of that tour we held four tribal specific sessions. a constant, consistent message that i heard across all four listening sessions with native leaders was the need for more supportive housing and culturally specific program, particularly to support native people supporting homelessness. current and historical trauma amongst native americans contributed to the disproportionately high prevalence in these communities. and they struggle toll access services, of course, and to maintain housing stajt. -- stability. it's a difficult challenge and tribal leaders are using scarce resources to try 20 address challenges of over crowded homes and low homeownership rates on tribal lands. consider in minnesota 49% of native households own their own homes compared to 76% of white households. nationally this homeownership disparity exists as well with 51% native
