missouri had on the books missouri had on the books a law requiring the state to have its primary today. on february 7th. the republican party said if do you that it will cost you half delegates. they said we'll change it but missouri could not get the act together to actually change their law. by state law they have to hold a primary on this date. what about the threat twhoe lose half the delegates? to avoid losing half the delegates they decided to make the contest pointless. it's non-binding. so it's just a poll, essentially, a test. they picked another date next month to be the contest that will actual ly alot their delegates on march 17th. missouri republicans are doing an exercise in nonsense counsels for nothing except $7 million spent by the people of the state of missouri to hold this pointless nonsense thing. today's folly comes on the same day as the colorado and minnesota caucuses. which also mean nothing. those states will allocate delegates in april and may, respectively at conferences. they don't do their allocation today. republicans in these states will not make people

we start in missouri. nbc news declares rick santorum as the projected winner in the missouri republican primary. rick santorum will finish first, mitt romney second, and ron paul third. newt gingrich was not on the ballot in this missouri primary contest. the primary is non-binding, the missouri republican party will caucus later this year to allocate delegates during their convention. the delegate count will not change. mitt romney will still, after tonight, have 84 delegates, newt gingrich 23, rick santorum 14, and ron paul 11. in the minnesota caucuses with 13% of the vote in, rick santorum has 43% with 3,551 votes. ron paul has 27% with 2,263 votes. mitt romney, 17% with 1,422 votes, and newt gingrich is at 12% with 972 votes so far. and in the colorado caucuses we are just now getting our first information. colorado is showing santorum at 50%, newt gingrich at 21%, and mitt romney at 19%, ron paul at 10%. joining me now is msnbc political analyst steve schmidt, a senior adviser to the 2008 mccain cam

be another contest in missouri next month that will count so we'll count it then. mitt romney if you look at last night technically did lose three contests. if you discount missouri, just looking at what happened in minnesota alone, is an almost inexplicable disaster. can we put the minnesota slate back up? look at the numbers. 24 point drop for mitt romney from 2008 to this year. which is 17% of the vote, mitt romney did not win a single county in the entire state of minnesota. this is a state he won the last time around. and it probably appropriate for me to mention at this point that mitt romney didn't even come in second in minnesota. mitt romney won it last time. but he came in third this time. rick santorum won, ron paul came in second. mitt romney couldn't beat ron paul in minnesota. if dell grates are awarded in a way that follows the results, rick santorum will get every single one of minnesota's 37 delegates. mitt romney will zero. rick santorum gets them all. mitt romney won this state in 2008. did the entire republican population of minnesota move out o
