what did you make of mitch daniels remarks? anything intrigue you about the fact they was still trying to pretty much, i thought, cue the gop line, obviously. still a gop governor, not aligned with any other candidate. >> the most important thing that he did is recognize that we have to close some of these loopholes and the only way we're going to get out of our problems is through growth. so those are the things that really the republicans, whether on the national stage or even at the state levels need to look at as far as a message going forward. and not get you caught up in buzz words of, loopholes, if you close a loophole that means you're raising taxes and all that nonsense. we need 20 to cut through it. >> jimmy, it strikes me as -- even mitch daniels, who i respect, is talking if we cut taxes, that's what we need to do, to raise the revenues we need over time. no one will talk honestly we may need higher energy taxes or con simpgs taxes and low are taxes elsewhere, but if we can't get more candor from him -- >> right. it

joining me now, governor mitch daniels.arne duncan come out, secretary of education, offer up this waiver program because it looks like a revamped version of no child left behind isn't going to get through this congress any time soon. what are some of the waivers you're going to be asking for? >> first let me thank secretary duncan. i think he's doing exactly the right thing here, chuck. ideally congress would have gotten organized to make the necessary modifications. but in the absence of that, i think it's right for the department to act. and we're most interested in the flexibility to measure the growth of students, not simply their absolute levels, taking into account that the teacher or the school does not control the level at which kids enter school. and what we're doing in indiana is measuring and then holding schools accountable, rewarding those teachers who help a child grow at least a year for every year in the classroom. that's the single most important thing, change that we could ask for. and the secretary, to h

it was mitt romney, tim pawlenty, and maybe mitch daniels, someone else, not sure. who are the top three names on the board in chicago now? >> i've always said romney was a weak front-runner. i still believe that to be the case. obviously governor perry is now emerged on the scene. he could be a very formidable candidate. one thing i learned, you saw an example of it today. you don't know people are going to perform in the presidential campaigns until they're out there, until they're handling questions and dealing with situati situations. and up in of us have seen governor perry out there. in some places, lawrence, it doesn't matter who the nominee is. every single one of them have now embraced the dogma of the tea party right. you saw it in the discussion about debt in which some of them actually urged default as a strategy and all of them embraced the notion that these tax cuts for the wealthy and tax breaks for oil and gas companies and for corporate jets were more important than things that could get our economy moving. more important than education, more import
