the 3800 block of mlk. when oakland police arrived here, this man according to investigators had a rifle and opened fire on those two officers. one of those officers was hit by gunfire. that man just went through surgery and is now listed in stable can be. those two officers immediately returned fire hitting the man with the gun and the gunman died a short time later at the hospital from those gunshot wounds. the first calls about the shooting came in at 1:30 this morning. neighbors say they heard quite a bit of gunfire outside. as many as two dozen rubdz potentially fired -- rounds potentially fired. what's unclear, if there was a verbal altercation or exchange prior to the shots being fired. >> i certainly can't go into what took place right before the shooting. i can only share with you at the time of the shooting. the suspect was armed with a rifle and shot the officer and that's when the officers returned fire. >> reporter: investigators have recovered the rifle used in this shooting here at the scene.
