today you have moderna being reviewed. tomorrow it's j&j. as well as when it comes to mixing and matching vaccines. what are we hearing from this meeting so far from the fda? >> yeah. yaz min, a lot to unpack. we know they are speaking with the experts and carefully going through these findings. as you said, this is an incredibly important process here that we know will take hours. we're expecting them to not conclude until later this afternoon and as you mentioned tomorrow they're going to pick up with j&j and, of course, unpack that nih study. that's really interesting. it's been very highly anticipated, and what this today not peer reviewed -- we'll get more on that tomorrow -- but it essentially says that it is safe to mix and match these vaccines. so if you've got vaccinated with the moderna, you can get a booster shot of pfizer and virus versa. where it stands out and what is really interesting is if you got vaccinated with j&j, this study suggests you could get a booster shot of pfizer or moderna as opposed to getting a booster of joh

the vote today was 19-0 in favor of moderna offering a booster shot. that third shot would be half the dose of the other two shots. and you take it no sooner than six months after your second shot of moderna. it will be for people aged 65 and over and also people younger than 65 who are at high risk for covid because of other medical issues or they're at high risk of covid exposure because of where they live or where they work. it's the same criteria that's being used for the pfizer shot in terms of who qualifies for a booster. the fda looks like it's on its way toward a similar set of approvals for moderna with that unanimous vote from the fda advisory panel recommending that. tomorrow, that same advisory panel will consider the question of johnson & johnson, the single shot vaccine, and whether there's going to be a booster for that. there's a lot of interesting potential variables that, we'll talk about that in just a moment. you know, big picture, a, more americans need to get vaccinated, period, regardless of who gets a booster shot or not. and, b

so let's take a look at what moderna is asking. what they're asking for actually is a little different, which is that they want authorization for half-dose boosters. in other words, they're not going to give a full dose. they say a half a dose should work just fine and that they can then gooif v give more vaccine to folks around the rest of the world. and also you have to be more than six months out from your second moderna shot, and you have to be over age 65, or you have to have certain health conditions or you have to have sort of a risky situation where you live, where you work, if you're exposed to covid, like a health care worker, or if you live, for example, in a nursing home. kate, you also mentioned mixing and matching vaccines. a lot of people have had questions about this. the bottom line is, this study shows that it was safe and that it really might be helpful to some people. let's take a look at what this study found. so this was a relatively small study, about 450 participants. interestingly, the folk who is got johns

moderna is the same, held there. is it a given in your mind that johnson & johnson's booster will be authorized as well? >> it really needs to be because first of all there are 15 million americans, myself included, who got the one-dose johnson & johnson vaccine who had no guidance throughout, even though we're seeing the data that the one-dose regimen is not as effective as the two doses of pfizer or moderna. back in august, immunocompromised individuals were told if they got pfizer or moderna, they can get the third dose. compromised people with the johnson & johnson vaccine have not been told that. i would hope what the fda does at the minimum is to harmonize to reduce confusion. they should at the minimum say that johnson & johnson recipients should be able to get a booster six months out. there's a question of maybe they should get a booster sooner. maybe also as elizabeth reported they should be able to receive a mix-and-match approach with pfizer or moderna. i hope that's also the case. at a baseline, they sho
