mona kosar abdi has more. mona, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning.od of tense negotiations delta and its pilots union have finally reached a tentative agreement narrowly avoiding a strike during this holiday season. for years the airline's pilots have pushed for better pay and improvement in schedules. as well as vacation time. they say the pandemic and rocky recovery have left them overworked and exhausted, pointing out that they've helped the airline return to profitability, and now under this new agreement, pilots would receive raises topping 30% over four years and in a statement to abc news, a delta spokesperson said that we're pleased to have reached an agreement in principle for a new pilot contract, one that recognizes the contributions of our pilots to our success. if accepted by the union this is set to have a ripple effect across the industry. it could impact negotiations currently going on at american and united. also adding to the strain is an industrywide pilot shortage that has led to an increase in airfare but it seems that travelers

mona, what does it mean from an investment perspective at this point?rally back to above 4,000. it's kind of in this zone where it's make or break whether it's a bear market rally and what does next year hold if, in fact, the consensus is right that overall earnings numbers probably have to come down a bit? >> it's a great point. the labor market broadly, we also think labor market tends to be a lagging indicator if we have coincident loit leading indicators like leis, the yield curve, even housing market and the broader picture we're seeing real time in terms of tech layoff, those seem to be the more leading indicators of the economy. you'll start to see softness in the labor market in the 6 to 12 months ahead we're starting from a position of relative strength that's what gives us comfort in that we won't see this deeper prolonged recessionary environment. your point, we do think the first half of 2023 brings some softness not only from the economic picture, the earnings picture, earnings being revised downward. we could start to see market volatility
