joining me now is morgan brennan for cnbc on msnbc.fferent this time. what's going on with "barbenheimer" opening weekend? >> i think just the fact that we have a name, chris, barbenheimer says it all. two movies that couldn't be any more opposite of each other. "barbie," a comedy, focused on the iconic doll made by mattel for decades now, and "oppenheimer" which comes from universal, msnbc sister company, a drama about the lead scientist of the atomic bomb a number of decades ago. both have very strong reviews. so far 90% for "barbie," the 96% for "oppenheimer" on rotten tomatoes. you have reports that people are going to do double features. ticket sales are brisk and more shows have been added to accommodate all the demand. so far, chris, $22 million in thursday night preview tickets. that's the strongest start for a film this year, and 10 1/2 million for "oppenheimer." >> another big movie, "mission impossible" didn't meet expectations last weekend. there are such high expectations for this. how much of what happens at the box offic

morgan brennan is standing by. what is the mood on wall street? >> i mean, the mood is positive, chris, markets are reacting very positively to this news. the s&p 500 and nasdaq are both trading at fresh one-year plus highs. the dow industrial is making gains as well. up about 140 points right now. and you just heard it from brian, inflation is easing. you've got higher interest rates, supply chains returning to normal, for example, in the auto market, and that means pressure on the pace of inflation. that could give the federal reserve some breathing room in regards to future rate increases. right now, the market expects another quarter point increase by the central bank later in month. after this expected reading for cpi, there are growing expectations on wall street now that this could be the last increase. remember, the fed has said that it expects to increase two more times. does this reading actually change that. the consumer price index grew at the lowest pace since march of 2021, the reading that economists play the closest attention to is

nbc's steve patterson is at a gas station in california, and cnbc's morgan brennan is tracking the impactains. so steve, explain how heat is impacting prices at the pump. >> reporter: yeah. it's pretty simple. it's these refineries across the country that are doing what i'm doing, basking in the heat, in the searing heat in some cases, although it's much worse where we have been. so the gulf, places like louisiana, texas, even parts of the west coast have these massive oil refineries. they are baking in 100 degree temperatures for several days. these refineries are where we turn crude oil into the gasoline that we use at the pump. and because they're so hot they can't operate at full capacity. so we're cutting production to the refineries that make gasoline, making gasoline more expensive. it is tough but it's even tougher for people that need -- rely on gas for their everyday life, especially here in a place like california where gas is now $5 a gallon. we spoke to some of those people, my colleague dana griffin, about how they're dealing with this. here's what they told her. listen. >>

morgan brennan for us. thank you. this rate decision is coming as americans are feeling confident about the economy. joined my bloomberg news senior washington correspondent to talk more about that. it's good to have you on. i appreciate it. i want to talk first about the consumer confidence number, what this means. >> what we're seeing right now is that americans do have a little bit of optimism about what's ahead. there's still a lot of uncertainty. the dollar is still fluctuating. right now we're just experiencing the reaction to preordained fed interest rate increase, but what powell says at 2:30 will influence what we know heading into september where there is an expectation that the long-held consensus among federal reserve policy makers might actually break, and there might be some indecision or division or what should happen next to combat inflation, and what the housing market and labor market needs. >> give us a trend line, if you will, right, because you're looking at interest rates right now, 22-year high
