currently we have hurricane warnings up for morgan city to destin, florida. so still under a hurricane warning. if you have major storm preps in this area, providing yourself and your family with enough food and water for three days for everybody at home, now would be the time to do it. it's interesting, even if we get a category 1 storm, a lot of people think that's not so bad. a category 1 storm certainly can topple down shallow rooted trees and power lines so power outages are almost likely when you have a storm like this. heavy rain and frequent lightning sliding across florida now as we zoom into the tampa area, getting very heavy rain in the region to the north of tampa and the suburbs there but some breaks, really a better situation than it could have been for the area. heavier rain actually along the east coast of florida. you're seeing some of that near okeechobee and frequent lightning strikes with the system. the forecast models and the track is getting more of a consensus with the models. many taking it over new orleans. so ironic to have it happe

still pounding areas around new orleans and morgan city and hoe ma, plaquemines parish.he levees are being topped outside the flood protection zone. that's where the mississippi river goes southeast out of the new orleans. you can see the storm on the radar presentation. this storm has been doing a lot of head fakes. looking pretty good right now. it is a hurricane with winds sustained at 80 gusting toward 100. had some gusts to 70 in new orleans in just the past hour. bands going back toward mobile. there was a tornado there earlier today. the hurricane itself, winds of 780, gusting to 100, moving west, northwest at 6 but creeping here. forecast on the hurricane center takes it northwest through the day. by afternoon getting between baton rouge and lafayette and maybe toward alexandria this evening and toward shreveport tonight. tomorrow through arkansas and then through missouri but the rains will be a tremendous issue with this system as the estimates of rainfall. in is our computer model. up to 20 inches of rain. even monroe there could be 8 to 10 inches of rain. aro

for morgan city. because that means heavier rain and a rain event that's of longer duration. northwesterly track at about 7 miles an hour, making landfall tonight and early into tomorrow morning. the question is how much storm surge and how much rainfall do we get with this. and the rainfall right now is mostly to the southern part of the storm system. but when you see white on this ma it indicates rainfall that is expected to be over 10 inches, and that's important when you talk about new orleans. we discussed the levees. that they beefed those up to withstand the storm surge, but you also have to pump out the rain water that will accumulate. and even the modern pumps that they have installed are only designed to pump out an inch for the first hour, and then a half an inch for every hour after that. and you know during a hurricane or tropical storm the rainfall rates can be two, three, and at times four inches per hour. so there's going to be significant flooding in new orleans and then points northward as well. so that's the latest from here. we are live along the mississip
