mr. gillespie win or narrowly fall short he will have handed the 2018 -- the 2018 candidates in competitive a playbook for trump era campaigns. deploy the president's politics but avoid mr. trump himself. that's what mr. gillespie has done. campaigned on trump's issues but careful not to say his name too much. certainly hasn't campaigned with him. when you look at that strategy, what is your reaction? >> well, it's the best strategy i think they can follow, but i will tell you. i'm disappointed in ed gillespie. i know him well. he's a decent man. he hasn't rahn decent campaign. he's appealed to the worst instincts of virginia voters and maybe done it effectively. i can't gauge that, but this isn't the ed gillespie that i knew. >> we don't know what will happen tomorrow, governor, but should the democrats not come out victorious, are you concerned about the future of the party and the messaging of the party? >> well, i've always been concerned about the messaging of party. and concerned about the future of the party, because we haven't done well in our congressional election. lost the 2016 e

mr. gillespie draped himself in mr. trump's clothes. it shows the limits of trumpism and republicans will have a choice about how clearly to embrace it. our panel of reporters and guests are back. let me start with "the new york times" piece which goes on to say, mr. trump posted messages promoetsing mr. gillespie including on election day but didn't campaign with him. an extraordinary recklition that appearing with the president of his own party would hurt more than help. something that's rarely happened since richard nixon was engulfed by watergate. peter baker, to be fair, i worked for and you covered a president who after 9/11, didn't campaign a lot for republicans because of what had just happened. but what does it say about this white house moving forward that they now have a proof point that the president is toxic in battleground states? >> yeah, that's right. and this is proof positive that any future republican candidate in a competative state, particularly that's trending blue the way virginia is, is going to think twice about

virginia and how the democrat ralph northam beat republican ed gillespie in one of the first indications of how voters might be reacting to mridency so far. gillespie chose a strategy of trying to thread a needle. he distanced himself personally from president trump, but accepted the president's support on twitter and campaigned with vice president pence and pursued a tv ad campaign that embraced many of the president's positions on issues such as immigration and confederate statues. an apparent attempt to win over the trump base and get them to the voting booths. running ads like this one. >> ms-13 is a menace, yet ralph northam voted in favor of sanctuary cities which let dangerous illegals back on the street. >> i want to keep our statues up. our history is our history and we need to teach it. not erase it. >> now, before election day, before yesterday, trump strategist steve bannon said, quote, i think the big lesson for tuesday is that in gillespie's case trumpism without trump can show the way forward. if that's the case, democrats better be very, very worried. it was gillespie's embrace of president trump's agenda and

the president did tweet several times in favor of gillespie, and recorded a late robo-call of support. but from south korea today, mrump dished criticism, tweeting that "gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what i stand for." the democratic tide in virginia also carried other statewide races and added 14 seats in the house of delegates. democrats need just three more seats-- with a handful of races yet to be called-- to retake the chamber for the first time in two decades. one of the winners was danica roem, the first openly transgender candidate to win a seat in any state legislature. >> we won because i am a transgender woman, because i am a reporter, because i am lifelong resident of manassas, because of my inherent identifiers, not despite them. i never ran away from them. i championed them. >> woodruff: roem ousted republican bob marshall, one of the state's most conservative legislators. he had sponsored a bill that would limit the bathrooms used by transgender people. meanwhile, in new jersey, democrat philip murphy won the governor's race, in a pickup for the party. the former goldman sachs execut
