mrs. johnson came into the white house. well, it wasn't like when anybody else came into the white house. the president had been shot in the johnson's home state, and mrs. johnson said the world looks at the living and wishes for the dead, so it was an awful time for them to come into the white house. and it was some weeks before they did move into the white house, and mrs. johnson was continually asked and her press secretary, liz carpenter, was just asked repeatedly when are the johnsons moving into the white house. and finally mrs. johnson had had that up to here, and she said heaven that i could help mrs. kennedy's comfort, but at least i can help her convenience, so after that the questions stopped. but -- mrs. johnson was just an adventurist. when you -- when you came in to see her, she always wanted to know what you were doing. what was new with you, what was the latest. and when she traveled, she always had these had these little spiral notebooks like this, and she kept them in her purse with a ballpoint pen, and she

mr. johnson? >> about a year ago, they came out with a report on who had the best jobs record when it came to their time in office. i have the best record when it came to jobs. [applause] my response to that was the same as my response to that when i was governor of new mexico. i did not create one single job as governor of new mexico. the private sector creates jobs. [applause] but do not underestimate the power of the executive when it comes to appointing the heads of all the agencies, all boards and commissions, in essence controlling all rules and regulations. do not underestimate that. i will tell you that in new mexico, rules and regulations got better on a daily basis. they got better from the standpoint of taking less time and money to comply with what it was government wanted. in new mexico, i am going to argue that businesses went to bed knowing with certainty that things were not going to get worse because johnson was not going to let them get worse. he was always going to be advocating

mrs. johnson. you have a chapter -- let me just ask you, first, why did you devote a chapter called lady bird? >> guest: well, i think that the story of lady bird johnson's transformation, which in this book, "means of ascent, is what the lady bird chapter is about, is one of the most wonderful stories that i ever heard. you know, she was so shy as a girl, she had this really painful public shyness, where she couldn't bear to speak in public. when she was in high school, she told me, she prayed that if she finished first or second in the class and would have to give a speech as valedictorian or salutatorian at her graduation, she prayed that she would get smallpox, and i wrote, "she would rather risk the scars than speak in public." now, she marries lyndon johnson. she, of course, cannot campaign for him, make speeches for him. more than that, she doesn't participate in the political part of his life at all, and i asked her why not and she said, "well, i didn't want to be part of absolutely everythi

mr. johnson, you get the first crack at the next one. what does your party want to do about the problems associated with illegal immigration? >> illegal immigration, then thing. legal immigration, a good thing. i think we should make it as easy as possible for somebody who wants to come into this country and work to get a work visa. not a green card, not citizenship, but a work visa that would entail a background check and the social security cards and other applicable taxes would get paid. now, if we implement a fair tax, taxes are not an issue of all, whether you are legal, illegal, a visitor, a u.s. citizen, you're not going to be able to avoid paying a fair tax. with regard to the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country right now, we need to setup a grace period by which we can document those in legal immigrants. what is the reason we have 11 million in illegal immigrants? it is the unintended consequence of reagan setting up his amnesty in the 1980's and putting government in charge of quotas, matching a businesses with potenti

there for almost two weeks after they became -- after he became president, and this is lady bird johnson and mrs. ford and the two johnson girls. they are being shown the white house living room -- white house bedroom, and when i did an edit for this book i did on the ford presidency, i looked back, and i wonder, i forgot that suitcases in the picture, this is right before mrs. ford went out to bethesda naval hospital where she ultimately had a mastectomy, and she never told mrs. johnson that she was going there that day, and this is in the hospital with bob hope. bob hope's name comes up quite a bit. in fact, he was the one who said president ford made golf a contact sport, and -- and mrs. ford recovered nicely from this operation. probably i know she's best known for the betty ford center, people with alcohol and drug dependency, but i -- i can't imagine how many women's lives she saved. happy rockefeller was one of them who got a test because of her. she brought that whole problem out into the open. this is -- we had a very close relationship. this is in the white house solarium. mrs. ford is
