mr. president. i think that's the issue. mike pence human being, great guy, i got to spend a lot of time with him. i think people want to see a little more fire, someone who is going to stand up and fight hard. that's what the allure of prum w president trump is and that's what the allure of mike desantis is. >> do you think mike pence can be the future of the republican party? >> it's hard to know but for all the reasons mike described, it's hard. he in this moment has a bit of a choice. i think if we look at the results of the mid terms last week, there is a constituency in american politics for people who are not election deniers, who are espousing real policy and perhaps people who are willing to push back on those things. pence doesn't really want to be that person. he wants to be just distant enough from it that he can't be, you know, called an election denier but not so distant that he might be perceived as being more in the sort of liz cheney vein of the republican party, and it's just hard to see who that appeals to. you know,

mr. miller president trump inserted for the first time a line in his speech that said, quote, and we will see whether mike pence enters history as a truly great and courageous leader. all he has to do is refer the illegally-submitted electoral votes back to the states that were given false and fraudulent information where they want to recertify. no prior version of this speech had mentioned vice president pence or his role on january 6th. the last-minute edits by president trump to his speech were part of the president's pressure campaign against his own vice president. >> barb, is it a safe assumption that those are the kinds of questions the doj might have for stephen miller? are they likely to be looking at other things? >> no, i think it's exactly right. two reasons. one is the crime of seditious conspiracy or something else relating to the physical attack, but i think a more likely charge they may be proving is conspiracy to defraud the united states. that would not require donald trump to be connected to the actual violence at the capitol. it would be enough to show he was pressuring mike pence to get him

mr. trump was agitating the crowd to go to our congressional building. he was telling them about the democrats stealing the election. he just needed pence's help. is a real patriot. trump is a rat. host: kevin, what do you think about donald trump announcing he is going to run for president again. how do you think that will affect the party overall and particularly the governing majority in the house. host: it creates a real challenge for the republican party. one of the things we saw in the most recent election is that the magic of the trump brand is fading. whatever energy he brought to the gop, it is just not working as well. i had a colleague at the american enterprise institute who wrote a fantastic piece. he looked at gop candidates who ran for the house of representatives and when he looked at those who had a trump endorsement versus those who did not the ones who had a trump endorsement underperformed. voters were not impressed. those who kept the former president at arms length did better than expected. for the president to say he is still the man, it creates a real challenge and how republicans sorted out remains to be seen. host: syl

pence is just like, i'm going to talk. >> well, and charlie, again, correct me if i'm wrong on this, but i believe that his chief of staff and his counsel, greg jacob and mrort, have already gone in, right, before the grand jury investigating january 6th-related crimes, is that right? >> we believe that is the case, yes. and of course they talked to the january 6th committee, as well. >> as well, right. and we know some of their testimony from what was aired publicly, but of course not everything that doj would have asked them. charlie, broaden this lens for us in terms of, i mean, pence is a witness in one of the two criminal investigations under the purview of the special counsel, but this has been a week where so many of the efforts to hold him accountable or to otherwise investigate places where there's been a whole lot of smoke, his taxes, his closest allies in the senate, in the georgia investigation, this has been a week where a lot of legal wheels have finally ground in the direction of freeing things up for these cases pursuing donald trump criminally. >> that's right. there were a lot of developments, and this week is only halfway over, of cours
