joining me now msnbc's garrett haake in el paso, janelle nelson, and msnbc political analyst rick tylerr advisor to newt gingrich and ted cruz. garrett, first to you, there on the ground in texas, who do you see coming out and what's the turnout at least on election day? >> reporter: what i'm hearing from folks around the state is turnout continues to be robust around the state, particularly in the big cities. the theory of the case near not unlike what you heard about in nevada but on a much, much, much larger scale here in texas. democratic voters in the big cities tend to run up the score in probably the five or six biggest counties of this state. what ends up happening is the other 250 or so counties in texas come in 70-30 or so in favor of republicans and that's why texas has been so red for so long. the o'rourke campaign has based their entire campaign on turning out voters who just don't normally participate. i don't even want to call them voters yet because it's based on a theory of the case that has not been proven. they need enormous turnout from young people, from latino vote

jonathan capehart, msnbc contributor, josh barro, also an msnbc contributor. they're going to hang out with us here for the next hour or so. nate cone, "new york times" said in the final days democrats picked up 3 points in their push in the final polls there. which party do you both believe finished stronger? >> if you look at those "new york times" polls it's clearly the democrats. the "new york times" has done an imminence number of polls in the last couple of the months. the last wave produced really ugly results for democrats, losing for example the georgia sixth district, that's outside atlanta. there was that very high profile special election. the democrats lost by a few points. they're showing the democratic challenger who's never held elective office up three points on the republican incumbent. there's a district in chicago, the illinois 14th. a very republican area, they show a strong lead for the democratic challenger in that district as well. a lot of places that weren't even really supposed to be on the map for democrats not just showing competit

msnbc's chris jansing and jacob soboroff are gathering the latest details. first we go to chris at the family reunification center. chris, what are you hearing? what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, there's a press conference going on right now, and there was just a description by the local councilman, rob mccoy, that is just as heartbreaking as you can possibly imagine. he said there are 60 families in there. none of them have been given notifications yet. he said as you can imagine there is a lot of crying, a lot of people are pacing, and as he put it, the longer people have had to wait, the more intense it has become, and many people have been there since the early morning hours, so they have been waiting a very long time. always when you have these mass shootings, the scene afterward is chaotic, and they're very methodical about identifying both the victims and those who were injured. talking to police officials, they say that there was an effect in there because so many people ran and so many people were injured in trying to get away, there are at lea

good morning, craig melvin, msnbc headquarters here in new york city. that breaking news on the mueller investigation is where we start. shortly before president trump left for his meeting with world leaders in argentina, last hour just a few moments ago he called his one-time attorney and fixer michael cohen a quote, weak person, who is lying. cohen made a surprise appearance in a federal courtroom in manhattan this morning. he named the president. he named president trump in a shocking new plea deal involving trump tower moscow. for the first time cohen has pled guilty to charges brought by the special counsel's office. in august you'll remember that cohen pled guilty to federal prosecutors who oversee the southern district of new york. those charges involved tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance violations. today the special counsel landed a guilty plea for lying to congress. the president lashing out at the special counsel's investigation just hours before that new plea deal was announced. one read in part, quote, did you ever see an investig

an msnbc contributor. elise jordan is the co-host of words, the words matter podcast.an msnbc political analyst. and, elise, i want to go first to mississippi tonight. you are from mississippi. i want to get your reaction to that senate race and what we saw there. >> i think what mike espy did pretty much unaided by the national democratic party establishment is pretty incredible and impressive, and he has shown that democrats should compete in the state and that they have a chance in mississippi. he was up against an incredibly weak candidate. donald trump pulled her over the finish line. and you look at where mike espy did make inroads in places like desoto county, suburb of memphis, tennessee, more educated population. it mirrors the national pattern of educated professionals moving away from the republican party, even in mississippi. but then you look at other more rural areas of mississippi and cindy hyde-smith managed to even outperform, you know, say mitt romney and was at a very trump level of support. so donald trump is as strong as ever in the rural places of

msnbc contributor, welcome to you both. i want to get both your reactions on florida. first. what stands out to you and what are your expectations? >> 13,000 is a really large margin to turn over in a recount. if it were just a matter of counting ballots, i would say it's too large an amount to turn over. you're going to have provisional ballots to go through. i think the bigger question is there is this weird situation in broward county where about 3% of people who cast a vote in the governor's race did not cast a vote in the senate race. that's highly unusual. in every other county in nfloria it was about the same number of votes. people were going to show up in both of them. the senate race was sort of in the bottom left-hand corner of the first page of the ballot and it was easy to miss it. it was below the instructions and just kind of like you're supposed to start in the middle where the governor was soch. so when they get to the hand count, that's not going to do bill nelson any good. his campaign has been suggesting they don't think that's the problem. they thi
