and joining us, msnbc legal contributor, and a civil rights attorney and former prosecutors and msnbc analysts and served as a prosecutor in the bill cosby case. yasmin, get us up to speed of what is happening in the courtroom. >> reporter: they are going through the answer and question period in the jury selection, reading their 42 answers to the questions on the jury questionnaire. we have 12 initial jurors that passed the initial phase of the process, and what that means is once they fill a jury box of 18 people, then they move on to the next phase called voir dire. they get to ask then their own questions, for instance -- in the parameter of what the judge laid out, and they can't say i'm a republican or did you vote for trump or biden, but they do get to ask their own set of sub questions. one of the attorneys could say i don't want one of these potential jurors to be part of the jury, and they don't have to have a reason. they can do that ten separate times, but then they need to also have specific reasons outside of those ten separate times. they will keep doing that, josÉ, unt

an msnbc political analyst.a, monday is the start of jury selection. what are you going to be watching for? >> i'm going to be watching to see how often the defense tries to use challenges for cause, so chris, let me just lay out for you and your viewers, there are two types of ways to get rid of potential jurors. one is called a preemptory challenge. you can exercise it for any reason, no questions asked. the other is a challenge for cause where you have reason to believe that somebody should be excused because there's no way they can be fair and impartial. that's where the answers to that 42 question and multiple sub parts of questions, jury questionnaire comes in. i'll be looking to see how difficult are the trump lawyers going to make it to select a jury by pointing to somebody's media diet or the fact that they have attended a rally or are they going to sit back and try and build a composite. in other words, there will have to be multiple factors to have to excuse someone. most of those questions on that ju

, an msnbc political analyst. so, lisa, what do we know about the seven jurors who have already been selected? >> jose, they're a cross section of new yorkers. we have got two attorneys on the jury, we got two residents of harlem, we have an oncology nurse, a salesperson, a teacher, and a software engineer. one of the things i find notable is that several of the jurors are young, appear to be in the early stages of their career, for example, one of them said that a year and a half ago, before they started the job that they're in now, they were in college and so we can infer from that the person is in their 20s. the other thing that i find interesting about these folks is that none of them have small children at home. that may be in part because at the very beginning of jury selection, judge merchan said that anybody who was unable to serve either because they were unable to be fair and impartial on one hand, or because they had other responsibilities that rendered them unable to serve could leave with no questions
