it was planted here by john muir in the 1880s. in this 1885 paragraph, you see the tree protected by a wooden cage planted in a prominent spot for all to see. keith soon realized the only way to save this tree would be to clone it. that's notoriously difficult with giant sequoias. there may be one person in the world capable of doing it. good thing he agreed to try. he runs the ancient tree archive in michigan. he told us via skype that he jumped at the chance to work on a tree that muir himself had touched. in fact, he'd do it for free. much like he does with other park trees, keith climbed the sequoia with a saw and a pair of pruning sheers. he sought out the newest growth, clipped it and overnighted it to michigan. there it was treated not just with tlc, but with hormones to stimulate root growth. >> i take a great sense of pride in being able to at least start the project. maybe my daughter will someday come to the john muir site and see this tree that her dad helped plant. >> there are a couple of different ideas. some say pl

now those who love muir woods worry that the place might be too popular. >> i think john muir would behis resident, paul, spoke to the marin county board of supervisors as they drafted a letter to the national park service about plans to manage the sometimes teeming masses. a large parking area is off the table. there's now a reservation plan in the works. >> would you have come if you would have needed to make a reservation. >> probably not. >> now the county will ask for a scientific study. >> the study would look scientifically at the study how many people are too many people? when does the benefit of sharing this environment become harmful to it? >> one thing that has to be taken into consideration is what is happening to those trees that the park service is charged with protecting. >> locals would like to cap park visits at 750,000 people a year. but this is a money-making venture for the national park service. the price of that? cars and buses that cause collateral damage by clogging local roads. >> did you count rings in the tree? >> thomas works as a volunteer in the park. he s
