buckley: jim, in 2011, head of the joints chief of staff, mike mullen, our greatest national security threat is our national debt. ua knowledge are dead is a big problem. johnny voted over $7 trillion worth of debt. over the next 13 or 15 years, we got 13 more batches of social security and medicare baby boom or entitlements coming through and the debt will grow tremendously unless we make changes. shouldn't we make changes and what changes should we make? mr. barksdale: i agree that the national debt is a significant problem. and while senator isakson does talk about not raising taxes. basically what you've done what i call a birth tax. all americans born today are born into almost $20 million of debt, whereas when you went to washington, it was $5.5 trillion. you can't wash your hands and say you weren't responsible. when you voted to deregulate wall street and then you supported president bush's approach to regulated wall street, that put our economy off the cliff. that created more than $4 trillion of debt. when you voted to take us into iraq unnecessarily and recklessly, that esc

nick mullen joins us now.d to have you back. >> great to be with you, neil. >> i'll go political brass tax with you, this latest development with hillary clinton and the continuing investigation, who does it help more in utah? the consensus seems to be it hurts her so by extension it helps mr. trump. what do you think? >> well, i don't think it's so clear that it helps donald trump. i think that actually i have a better chance of picking up some of hillary clinton's voters here in utah and across the country, and we're going to be fighting for those votes. hillary clinton is a deeply corrupt politician, we knew that already. >> you're saying your presence on the ticket draws more votes from hillary clinton than donald trump? >> i'm not saying that. we're drawing votes from donald trump. i think he's painfully aware of that and that's why he sent mike pence out to utah recently to help get these votes back, i don't think they're going to come back. but look, if people know that hill clinton is a corrupt politic

it's such a serious problem that a former chair of the joint chiefs of staff, admiral michael mullen's, said that the national debt is the single biggest threat to our national security. what is your plan to reduce the deficit, and how do you convince your critics that lower taxes for individuals and companies, which you support, are the right direction? glad you askedso that question. if there is any one factor that led me to run for office it is the crisis i have seen of our and up, andp democrats and republicans have done nothing about it. year, they passed a budget that raised our debt by another trillion dollars. all they do is pass cynical budgets that do not solve problems, do not bring the debt down, keep the government open, the kick the can forward. i support a simpson bowles style approach that involves spending increases as well as structural changes to our entitlement programs. we all know that's what needs to happen. every grownup understands that's what needs to happen, but this generation of politicians doesn't have the guts to do it because they are so afraid of making
