murthy: well, chris, the numbers are deeply concerning.een -- driven by the delta variant, cases have searched over the last several weeks and how high they could go is an open question, but i do think there are a couple of things buried in the data which are very important to recognize. number one is that the vast majority of people who are ending up in hospital and who are losing their lives to this illness are those who are unvaccinated, which means that the vaccinations are doing their job to keep people out of the hospital and to save lives, and what we've got to do is get more people vaccinated as quickly as possible. it was encouraging, chris, over the last three days in particular, to see that we topped 1 million vaccinations administered each day. that hasn't happened in a long time. my hope is that that will continue to accelerate because that is ultimately how we are going to save lives and overcome the delta variant. >> chris: the fda is expected to take the pfizer vaccine off emergency use and give it full approval, perhaps as

vivek murthy. s sir, thank you so much for being with us this morning. fda, of course, is poised to give full approval to spfizer's vaccine this week. could that come tomorrow? do you expect that this decision is going to make more americans willing to get vaccinated? >> well, brianna, i won't get ahead of the fda's announcement. we've known for a while they were considering the full approval for the pfizer vaccine. and i anticipate if and when that comes, that will have two impacts. i think for people who have been waiting for this, and that's a small number of people, but i think still significant. this may tip them over toward getting vaccinated. but i also think for businesses and universities that have been thinking about putting vaccine requirements in place in order to create safer spaces for people to work and learn, i think that this move from the fda when it comes will actually help them to move forward with those kinds of plans. all of this said, brianna, what's important for us to realize is that we've had strong evidence from real-world data

vivek murthy. it's great to have you with us this morning.back a step and talk about the booster shots and why you think they're necessary. >> good morning, willie. yesterday we made an announcement that we plan to start offering booster shots on september 20th to people at their eighth month anniversary from their last shot. the reason this is so important is because what we've seen in the data. we've seen number one that your protection against the worst outcome, hospitalizations and deaths, if you get vaccinated still remain high but there's a protection against mild and moderate disease. that erosion, if it continues, may, in fact, mean that more people are at risk of hospitalization. we want to act ahead of the virus, we want to make this plan now so we can ensure protection from the vaccine is extended. and that's the goal of the booster program. >> as you say, i think most doctors and public health experts like yourself saw this coming that there would be a need for the boosters. i'm sure you heard criticism from the w.h.o., particular

murthy, who said the concern is that the steady decline that they're seeing in evefficacy so far, th it could lead, he said, at some point to reduced protection against severe disease and that's what they're saying is most worrisome here? >> well, i think that's right. i hear what they're saying, the concern about the potential decrease in protection from severe disease and hospitalization. but the good news is, these vaccines remain extremely effective. they saw no decline in the level of protection from what we're most concerned about. i think they're getting a little ahead of themselves here. i want to see the fda's findings in terms of how safe and effective they feel the vaccines are and then there's an independent committee, the advisory committee on immunization practices, that makes recommendations to cdc in terms of who should get vaccines and when. i'll be watching that deliberation closely to see, is it truly time to give boosters to everyone in america. >> so, bottom line tonight, with just a few seconds left, you say wait to see what the fda says on this and that cdc adv

vivek murthy joins us now.espite those numbers in florida, the governor there, ron desantis, says there will be no new restrictions and he'll not mandate masks. when you hear that, does it concern you? >> well, gayle, good morning to you as well. and i am deeply concernrned abo what's hapappening in florida a certainly in many parts of our country with cases rising.g. and i think w what we have seen time and timee again with covid-19 is that it's going to throw curveballs at us. delta variant is the latest curveball. what we have to be ready to do is increase our vaccination rates while using mitigation measures, including wearing masks. that's one of the reasons the cdc revised its guidance last weekek to encourage more mask usage because we know it's a powerful w way to reduce the spread of the virus while getting vaccination rates up. >> that's the problem when the cdc revised its masks. some think the cdc doesn't know what it's doing. the cdc is being accused of flip-flopping. i know what you all are saying

murthy and i have been friends since college. what i was surprised with the speed of the rollout, and first prioritizing immunocompromised people, elderly people and co-morbid conditions and age 18 upwards can have a booster is surprising to me given that we know that vaccines still offer a fair degree of protection against hospitalization and severe illness. >> given the fact that those folks who got those vaccines first were in those immunocompromised front line health care workers and some people would argue, that there's the fact that there are 80,000 locations and 40,000 in pharmacies. jeff made it sound like they're ready to go. it's all going to be very smooth. do you see any problems? >> i frankly, think it will be a logistical nightmare. i understand that they are ramping up capacity, but we've had such a difficult time vaccinating americans with the first and second dose. we also have to think about messaging when sudden guidelines like this are presented to the millions of american, there isn't that nuanced messaging.

but i want you to listen to vivev murthy what he told cnn tonight. >> while we think boosters will ben what we're trying to vig yr out when to initiate those doses and who should the doses be available to based on where the need is greatest. >> you say there's a high likelihood a booster will be necessary for everyone regardless of health. when do you see that happening? >> we've been talking about this almost a whole year now and that's to build in greater resill resilience to all the variants coming in from abroad. so i'm anticipating a booster, a third immunization for quite some time. what caught us off-guard a little bit is when the if i see ceo put out a presser saying we need to do it for delta and not really providing any of the supporting information. i think when the doctor is saying we're going to take this in stages, people on immuno suppressive therapy especially organ organ transplants then we'll see a third immunization for older individuals and we'll see if we get any indication that we may need to go to that age group next. it's unclear how much information they're go
