chad myers, jump in if you will.'ve been watching the images of the ice collect and how fast it collects on everything from your radio antenna on the top of your car as you're driving to those power poles, to the trees, et cetera. there's really nothing you can do about that, is there? >> pretty helpless after it gets to be 30 degrees on the ground, we're 31, and it's raining. people don't understand how can it possible happen. how can it be below freezing and rain? because 3,000 feet up above it's 35 degrees. it makes rain drops up there. the raindrops fall through the colder air that's stuck here and it collects and collects quickly and gets heavy and very, very fast. we have new pictures in from augusta, georgia. i don't think you're going to believe what happened to some of those eastern counties in georgia and south carolina, nearly every tree has some type of damage. we're rolling videos right now trying to get them into the city. amazing stuff you'll see later on today. it's all about the rain, freezing rain.

chad myers tracking this storm for us.ad. >> you know, i'm going to grab phil by the collar and tell old punxsutawney that i really would like him to see his -- not see his shadow next time. there's the low right there, moving up the east coast. that's where it's going right there. if you are about 150 to 200 miles north of that low, that's where your snow's going to be. if you're long below, that's where the ice will be, going right through new york city. new york city tonight starts off as some snow, then you get to an ice storm tomorrow morning, and that's what everybody's panicked about. you can drive on the snow. snowing in kansas city, wichita, oklahoma city, but it's almost impossible to drive on an ice event, and there it goes, right through albany, schenectady, all the way back down into binghamton, syracuse. this is the area of the snow. remember i told you that low, that's where the snow's going to be? not much snow for new york, why? because it's going to be ice. it's going to be about 35 degrees at 3,000 feet.

chad myers is here with more of this wintery mess. a foot, you say? >> you know what, vermont and new hampshire, you know, they can handle it. they want it. they want to go play in it. it's not for new york city and it's not for boston. i guess, if you want to go upstate and get your snowmobiles out, like you need more, but there is more coming. look at the numbers, brooke, though. the third snowiest year ever in detroit, 77 inches of snow already this season. now, this is not just this year, this is the snow season, really from october to now. toledo, 72 inches, indianapolis, 52. and there's the big number, new york city 57 inches of snow, already. and it's not done. now, what is done, though, is some cold air, because i think we're going to start to get warm air in here. we could even get the chance of severe weather later in the week. the snow way up here for this storm, but it starts to warm up tremendously. we even have some flood watches out now and even a couple of flood warnings likely as it gets warmer, because some of that snow could melt so

want to get an update on the storm from our meteorologist chad myers at the weather center.ple of states have declared a state of emergency, and how serious will the storm get? >> it snows very hard overnight in a lot of cities. then it changes over to rain and sleet, gets warmer for a while tomorrow. then back over to snow before it ends. the snow is going hard in d.c. right now. into richmond, virginia, same story. backing off to rain in raleigh, getting up to about 33 degrees in a place that was almost just stand still earlier today, with all those people looking like atlanta a couple of weeks ago. here's what the forecast looks like. this is an area that is not getting a lot of snow, boston. it snows for a while but almost washed away by all the rain that's coming through. new york, big difference between long island and west of the city where you could get two inches if you get out towards the hampton. 12 inches west of the city in parts of new jersey. same story in philadelphia. less, more. d.c., less, more. it is just one thing after another. one big city after anothe
