nahid bhadelia. president biden's plans focus on ramping up existing procedures.s new approach for the president today? >> i'll echo what you just said. it's about time. we could have used the presence of this rapid test throughout the pandemic. and the way that these work is they don't detect genetic material of the virus, which is what the pcr tests do. the rapid tests look for proteins for the virus, tend to detect when there's a lot of virus. they may not be accurate when a person is most contagious. what they lose potentially on either sides of sensitivity, they make up because they're easily available, and if you do them serially, and a lot of people do them, you can actually decrease transmission. the way i think about it, if you have an eating problem in your community, and let's equate that to high virus transmissions, rapid tests are like speed bumps. you want a bunch of them and everyone to go through them frequently so it can change behavior. people when they find out positive, they may not do the activity they were going to do. and you want them to be

let me bring in nahid bhadelia and larry garrett, a journalist for "foreign policy" magazine. imagine two better people to talk to today. so doctor, where are with we this as you see it, and how much can these moves by the administration help? >> i think we are approaching a rapid increase in cases. and the breakthroughs are expected. we saw those in terms of the way that this variant has provided a way to evade part of our immune infections against infection, but because it's moving so fast,ic what you're seeing is, it's going to find those who are vulnerable, unvaccinated, but also those who are older, extremes of age who haven't been boosted, their immunity might be waning. and so the measures that are being put are wonderful. i think we need to have the increased testing, i think there should be more ability to sort of -- the website is great, but we need to get these tests where there are surges of cases. the thing that i think that people need to hear is that it requires work not just from the administration, but from all of us. we've all become a little lax. and even if

nahid bhadelia, she is an infectious diseases physician and the medical director of the special pathogens unit at boston medical center. also an msnbc medical contributor. sam, what else are we learning out of pfizer this morning? >> reporter: jose, good morning. it does get a little bit confusing, but here is the essence of it. what scientists are measuring right now is antibody production, when this vaccine is presented with the omicron variant. here's what they're finding. the difference between the second dose and the third dose is 25x, which is to say that if the antibody level starts at 6 after the second dose, it is now up to 154, and i'm told that number is a really good number and it correlates very highly with protection against infection. so that's that part of the equation. you also right now jose have to look for a frame of reference, that it's roughly the equivalent of receiving two shots against the original strain that came from china. so that's sort of your basis of comparison. as we talk about two shots, the question then becomes, if i have two shots, what kind of a posi
