a track that takes it just off the east and south of nantucket it should start to weaken to a category. in terms of that wind field, bring the hurricane force winds across the outer banks. could be some significant damage left over because of that. then the wind field is over open water during the day friday night and into saturday morning. this is where the tropical storm force winds should be coming across cape cod and the islands here in far southeastern new england and heads up to the new england maritime. and because of that there are some warnings upstream as we work our way up to the north and east. tropical storm warnings do touch far eastern massachusetts and hurricane warnings for the coastal waters just outside nantucket and cape code. so still a ways to go here on the fourth of july looking at significant impact from the first named storm of the season. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >> well, the threat of hurricane arthur for several cities to hold their independence day celebrations a day early. ♪ >> one of those cities was boston. the annual boston pops four

the closest path will be to nantucket. the winds gusting to around 30, gusting to tropical storm force later on tonight but the storm will be long gone tomorrow morning. >> eric, thank you. this is the earliest in a season a hurricane ever made landfall in north carolina. where tens of thousands are without power offarthur moved throughout the outer banks. as craig boswell tells us, given the forecast, they're actually feeling lucky in north carolina. arthur made landfall last night in the southern tip of the outer banks, pelting rain and wind speeds of # hundred miles an hour. some roads flooded, more than 40,000 and the state lost power. but by early night, north carolina officials were breathe ago collective sigh of relief. there were no casualties or serious injuries reported and most of the damage was minor. in nags head after the roanoak sound rose four feet around his restaurant, owner brian wilson raced to open in time for dinner. >> yesterday was supposed to be the busiest day of the entire season and we had nothi

a little portion of nantucket is. but looks like, for sure, a powerful storm is going to go to nova scotia with 70 miles per hour winds. a lot of rain. they expect a lot of tree damage in those areas. here is the specifics. zoomed in on the forecast. winds. if you're in the orange with. you have a chance for damaging winds. notice by 8:00 p.m. me we watch the wind arriving in the southern portions of the cape. 8:00 or 9:00 is the cut off if you want to avoid the gusty winds that could knock down tree branchs. head indoors for the night a little bit earlier than expected. it's pouring rain anyway. when you wake up in the morning, the storm is moving so fast the damaging wind potential is gone. we should wake up to a nice morning in the northeast. a lot of beaches will be sunny and should be warm and should be nice. but first we have to get there. the problem right now is the rain that is falling. we could deal with flash flooding as the next 12 hours produce maybe torrential rains in connecticut, rhode island, boston.

it may come a little close to cape cod, nantucket, martha's vineyard. you'll have a brush with a category 1 hurricane. you will expect tropical storm gusts later this evening and nova scotia gets hit by a hurricane. for those of you on cape cod, 8:00 p.m. looks like the timing of the arrival of your 40 to 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts. that's enough to take down some tree branches. that's the time you'll want to grab the kids, go inside and ride out the storm the rest of the night. by 5:00 a.m. in the morning the storm is racing to nova scotia and the strong winds are exiting at that time. if you stay out of the water, we won't have -- you don't have to worry about that so then it's just an inconvenience of a rainy fourth of july. it's going to pour up there in areas of new england today. we could pick up 2 to 3 inches of rain, and in maine up to 6 inches of rain. again, the threat is way down as long as you stay out of the water. they're yelling, lifeguards are telling people don't go in the water in that area. >> governor pat mccrory of north carolina s

nantucket, cape cod, you are still in the bull's eye for some powerful tropical storm force winds andlong with the rainfall farther inland, heavy year rain into massachusetts, en rhode island getting an excessive amount of rainfall. hurricane warning still impacting the waterways just off the coastline of nantucket and cape cod but to our inland areas dealing with the flash flood concerns because that amount of rainfall coming in. total so far, the last 24 hours, still pretty impressive close to two inches in new york. we had a cold front pushing through. >> cold front brought up a lot more moisture out of this hurricane and dumped it over the northeast. the coldfront helped keep the hurricane offshore. as we get through the next 24 hours, we are going to see things drying out behind the storm, but we are still going to be dealing with places around nova scotia. a lot of rainfall, two to four inches, wind gusts across the northeast. >> heed the warnings. >> yes. >> pay close attention. rebecca stevenson action thank you. >>> from texas to new mexico to california, tensions are rising

carolina coast, up to the virginia border and tropical storm warnings now posted as far north as nantucket and cape cod. the weather channel's jim cantore leads off our coverage from salvo, on the outer banks of north carolina. jim, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, lester. arthur is trying its best to be the earliest known landfalling hurricane in history in the state of north carolina. and unfortunately it is going to pack a punch. it's already interrupted thousands of people's vacations and it's going to do more harm before the night is out. let's time this out for you. as you mentioned, a 9 0e 90-mile-an-hour hurricane is expected to be a category two with winds of 100 miles an hour by tonight. it should come in just to the east of moorehead city around midnight or slightly after. by 2:00 a.m., 40 miles to the southwest of nagshead and friday morning once the sun comes up, it should clear the outer banks. friday, 2:00 p.m., 200 miles to the northeast of nagshead, in a much improved weather condition across the outer banks of north carolina. by saturday morning, especially early

off to the delmarva peninsula and friday night, this is where it makes another close pass to land, nantucket. that will bring stormy winds to massachusetts before it moves out to the north and east and to the canadian maritime. hurricane warnings are up. here's the reason why. the wind field of arkansas thundershower as it works its way off to the north brings the tropical winds ashore but overnight brings the hurricane winds across the outer banks. and another shot of it across feast massachusetts, that on friday night. in terms of any storm surge from this particular storm, anywhere from coastal georgia to coastal south carolina, a surge up to three feet. we could see it up to four feet in parts of eastern north carolina. that's a bit contingent on how strong that storm becomes. >>> in terms of rainfall, the final piece of this story, a heavy chain for rain, flash flooding. and into new england, most of that is coming on the fourth of july and has already canceled a lot of fourth of july fireworks. i'm meteorologist eric fesher for cbs news. >>> arthur is hitting on one of the busiest holi

there will be tropical storm conditions for the cape, for nantucket and the islands there and also intoifax, bay of fundy might get some water in it. it has a 45-foot tide there any way. you push some water in it with a tropical storm, that could even get a little bit worse. what happened yesterday, the big story where joe johns is, is where the water came out of the sound. typically, you worry about the water that companies over the ocean, over the shore, and on to the land. the water went through the cuts, went through ocracoke cuts, filled up the water behind the islands, filled this up a couple feet too high, and when the storm went by, all of a sudden, the wind pushed it off shore and the overwash came from the opposite direction we expect. >> yeah, kind of what you're not expecting. that's why, everybody, you tell us, stay off the beaches, even if it looks like it might be nice, it ain't. joe johns is on the beach. if the sun comes up -- you're on the south side. if the sun comes out, we still have conditions of the rip currents taking all that surge out, in these underwater river

saturday, a very close path to new england passing just about 50 to 100 miles to the southeast of nantucket before it races off toward the canadian maritime as a category 1 hurricane. in terms of rainfall this will be an impact. heavy rainfall near the coast and north and south carolina an as well across much of new england, parts of new york state and new jersey flash flooding a threat there. in terms of storm surge, this is tmething else to watch for, up to three feet from the georgia coastline up through much of south carolina, and the same type of surge here across eastern north carolina. people say sometimes it's only a category one storm, and scott we say don't focus on the category, focus on the impact. if a local official tells you you need to take action please listen to him and respect the nature. >> pelley: and hurricane status reached at 74-mile-per-hour winds. eric, thanks very much. we learned late today that airline passengers headed to the united states will be seeing tighter security soon because of a rapidly emerging terrorist threat. potentially involving american terrori
