what are we hearing from nantucket island?> reporter: what we're hearing is that they have got cell service back up. they're starting to get the power back up. but now what they're talking about is how do they get everybody back into what we consider a normal condition. because they got pounded on that island. so the governor, one of the things he reported was the good news is that on nantucket and throughout the state of massachusetts, there are no reports of any fatalities or serious injuries that are related to the storm. a lot of damage absolutely. and more than some people were expecting that they would get. but they are recovering from it. one of the things that the governor said this morning in a press conference andrea is that considering the amount of snow they got, he says the state came out of it in relatively good shape. andrea andrea? >> rehema ellis, you are the best. thank you so very much. thanks for being with us. >>> and deflategate looming over bill belichick and his team ahead of the big game this sunday on

ice and flooding have crippled the island of nantucket. 78-mile-per-hour hurricane force winds, tree limbs bent from the heavy snow triggering power to go out across the entire island. thousands are still in the dark more than 24 hours later. >> after it was all over, you know, when we're kind of looking around now going, man, there's wires down everywhere, there's tree limbs. >> reporter: we were on the first batch of public ferries to the island where 40 utility trucks from as far away as canada were loaded aboard. >> ice is a lot worse than just wind or rain. this is a hurricane in the winter. >> reporter: these nantucket natives weren't on the island when the storm hit. now just trying to get home. what have you been hearing it's like? >> my family's over there and they lost power in our neighborhood around 7:00 a.m. yesterday morning. >> very resilient, very strong group of people and we all work together. it's a close-knit community. we're like family. >> reporter: people are now out to take the ferry to nantucket, but vehicle space is reserved for utility and emergency vehicles

one wind gust 78 miles per hour on nantucket island. we understand that nantucket has no power now and is being evacuated. many cities and towns are losing power. about 20,000 customers in massachusetts at this point without power. also a little bit of flooding along the coast we're starting to see. high tide was at 4:00 a.m. and that did put the ocean over some sea walls in places in massachusetts. >> it's just amazing to see that snow coming down behind you. chris, thanks for being with me. >>> there's a big improvement in the new york city area, but it's far from over for parts of long island. bill karins is outside in the elements on rockefeller plaza. what's the latest there? >> this is kind of what it looks like to be on the fringe of a blizzard. we didn't go through the middle of it or even through the significant chunk of it. all predictions were for this to be a windy scene with moderate snow coming down. you can see the visibility is pretty excellent. we can pan up here. i can see all the way up to the top of the observation d

down on the cape and islands we've seen wind gusts on nantucket island of nearly 80 miles per hour. that's higher than hurricane force. so that means there are at least 10,000 people without power in massachusetts, most of those in southeastern massachusetts and cape cod at this point. as the storm keeps going, they say the intense snowfall coming at a couple inches maybe more than that an hour could continue through noon eastern time. the storm itself will continue past midnight into wednesday a little bit. so this is certainly an intense storm that was promised in new england, milissa. >> it looks bitterly cold. let's say warm. let's go to mike seidel who is reporting and filed this report from plymouth, massachusetts. >> what we have this morning is surge, high tide. the tide going out, down to the cape. right here the water came up and covered the entire front yard. you can see the tide way above where it should be. the parking lot behind me let's zoom in -- the wind out here and drifting. look at the waves out there. can you see those? that is not the harbor. that's the parking

up next power is completely out on nantucket where hurricane force winds and coastal flooding are the big issues on the island. a live report from nantucket next. mike seidel also filed this report from plymouth mass. >> reporter: now the water has backed off but we have another high tide in store later this afternoon. the national weather service has another coastal flood warning between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. we're going to be watching the same communities, plum island marshfield, those areas where they had evacuations this morning and out on nantucket. the wind direction is going to be more north and northwest. the surge shouldn't be as high 2 to 4 feet versus what we had this morning, 3 and 4 feet of surge as that water came in. for the rest of the afternoon, the winds will be howling and we still have snow flying through the skies. we may pick up several more inches on the south shore. temperatures are cold low 20s and windchills in the low single numbers. after sundown tonight the winds will ramp down. tomorrow, wednesday, a much more tranquil day. snow novembermoves out and it will be chilly but we'll have

power is back on for some people on nantucket island. that's good news. but thousands more remain in the dark and in the cold. >> the flooding was more intense and a lot higher than predicted, and it wasn't until late last night that we realized although it was 35 degrees, it was going to continue to snow. that's when we really started realizing that we had a bigger problem than what we originally anticipated. but we were prepared, but i don't know how anybody can be prepared entirely when you lose all your communications and electricity electricity. >> the blizzard dumped up to three feet of snow more than 90 centimeters in eastern massachusetts. similar amounts fell in new england, as well as the eastern part of long island. the storm snarled roads and air travel with more than 4700 flights canceled. >> but in new york city it was certainly a different story. some may have called it a blizzard gone bust. the national weather service warned of ranging conditions by tuesday morning. governor andrew cuomo shut down the subway system. in the end, only about

nantucket island is completely in the dark after ice build-up a substation. and in fox grove, massachusetts, the snow fell all night long and through the morning with snow totals approaching 3 feet, not exactly easy shoveling for people like fred schultz. >> it has been hard. >> reporter: the long island area in new york had more than a foot of snow falling but in new york city forecasts of 20- plus inches fell short. city kids did get a treat, just their 12th snow day since 1978. >> we got to miss school so it is all right. >> reporter: new york is back in business today after the governor and mayor shut down the roads and rails overnight. >> we got about half as much as what a lot of the projections had been. >> reporter: the supportways are back open and cars are driving on -- subways are back open and the cars are driving on clear streets and the city that slept for one night is awake again. >> over in boston the mayor says he is still thinking of closing the city schools for a third day on thursday since for them the storm was just as bad as forecasters
