ascent founder and executive director joins me now from naples, italy. marina, hi.ow difficult has the past week been, particularly in trying to get these girls out? >> it's been a nightmare. continues to be. it's -- we have tried everything. we have people pulling for us all over the world and at all levels. and we still can't seem to get people out. >> what have been some of the stories in terms of your attempts to get them out? >> well, i have been in touch constantly -- um -- i'm not there, myself. but it's been agonizing to be trying to lead the girls to whatever we've been told will work. and they're constantly on the phone with me. sometimes, on video. and i can see how badly it's all failing. um -- we've been three times caught in mobs that are -- where people have died. fortunately, our girls haven't died. um, we've had injuries. they have kept their heads and kept their families safe. but someone was shot right next to a 7-year-old's sister of one of our team members. one of our team members had her father -- his -- he had a head injury from apparently u.s

he's studying -- he goes with all these famous european scientists to a special marine station in naples, and he's studying sea urchin eggs, and a lot of famous scientists at the time are using sea urchin eggs as an experimental tool in trying to understand chromosomes and the very foundation of modern genetics. he was there with all these famous scientists at the same time, but he was, you know, i mentioned before, he was the son of a physicist. he's always focused on energy. he wants to understand how a sea urchin grows. to grow you need energy. so he comes up with these really innovative devices to sort of measure how much oxygen is being used, you know, how much carbon dioxide is given off and so on. and he finds that these sea urchin eggs are taking up a lot of oxygen as they grow. that sort of makes, you know, intuitive sense, if you're growing, you need energy. and so that's always in his mind, you know, trying to understand how a cell manages to grow because, you know, from the very beginning, he wants to understand cancer. if you want to understand cancer, you have to understand

actually, back in 2005, wilma, after katrina had hit, i was on a balcony in naples and got blown downen -- i had had some surgery. i wasn't quite -- i didn't have my sea legs. we see a fire engine, a fire truck going down that way. i think there is some activity that's happening because we are hearing some hubbub going on. and there is a lot of rain and a lot of wind. you know, and unlike earlier, we saw some stragglers on the street. it's pretty empty right now. again, not to make light of it. but we take this -- we take our safety very, very carefully. if we think that it is -- for example, we were -- for nightly news, we were going to go to another locate. we said, no, we are not going to do that. because as we mentioned the 100 100-mile-per-hour winds. it is not safe to be out on the streets. when it is dangerous, alex, you will not see us out, believe me. >> if there are fire trucks, is it the kinds of thing where you could have power lines down and fires could spark? a lot of people could think how could there be a fire, because you have got the rain tumbling down. but there cou
