it was 124-mile-per-hour cat 3 when it went through the nassau.ough the right portion of the strong, the strongest and we're not guaranteed that happens on our coast here, so the damage may be similar even though they dealt with 125. we're most likely going to deal with 145 but we may or may not go through the strong northeastern and eastern side of the hurricane. so that could be a little bit of saving grace but all the reports on nassau, a ton of power outages, trees down, roofs damaged, windows blown out. that's exactly what we'll experience here. they're just a little island out there. you could pile up nassau on top of each other up and down the u.s. coastline about 500 times compared to the land mass we're going to deal with on our coast and that's the story with this storm, tamron. it would be one thing for a category 4 making a landfall coming inland and then weakening but the fact we take it to the east coast to florida, in our history, never had a major category 4 hurricane, similar to this, up the coast for a period of time. usually one

right now it's a category 3 storm heading for nassau and is 60 miles from nassau, moving northwest about 12 miles per hour and could be a category 4 as early as 2 and will approach the east coast of florida. it could move over port canaveral. we have talked about the devastation expected on the coast. people but isolated spots could receive 12 inches of rain. the storm surge could be between 3 and 6 feet and could rise as much as 9 feet in spots. there's the southeasterly turn that we like to see, starting sunday morning as a category 1 storm so as strong is, winds at 90 miles per hour so really the only part of north carolina around wilmington no longer include counties in north carolina. yes, it could wobble left to right but has been the trend for 24 hours and the confidence is growing into the next day or so and really into crunch time less than an inch possible, 10 to 20-mile-an-hour wind so that's durham, chapel hill, siler city, raleigh on the line and 1 to 3 inches possible, wind gusts 20 to 30 miles per hour. the day to watch will be saturday, 60 degrees in the meantime and clou

correspondent tammy leitner with cameraman dwayne scott rode it out in nassau. tammy, we're looking at the radar. we can still see the tail end rain bands on radar where you are. it is not like this is ancient history. this just blew through there hours ago. as you keep going out, you discover more and more damage. >> reporter: yeah, you know, i'm not sure if you can tell, i'm standing on what is normally a very busy main street in downtown nassau. we're outside of the courthouse. right now it is littered with debris. nobody can get down here even if they needed to. and take a look behind me there. there is a huge tree toppled across this street. that thing is three feet wide. and it's probably hundreds of years old. and it's probably survived many, many, many storms. but not this one. that just gives you an idea of how bad it is. i'm going to try and navigate my way through this mine field of debris here to give you a little bit better idea of what we're looking at. and, you know, brian, a lot of times, when we're out there reporting, today i was standing on th

>> it has just left nassau, headed towards freeport in the bahamas. eventually making a run at florida and the governor said best case scenario, worst case scenario. best case scenario is the storm turns and stays in the water. worst case, it stays straight and heads right on to the shore. right on to the shore of the northern side of maybe coco beach, somewhere there around cape canaveral, as a 140 to possibly 145 mile per hour storm. the storm had a little trouble overnight because of the higher elevations of cuba, giving it some dry air. the farther it moves from cuba, the less influence cube has on the storm, so that's why it's strengthening right now, plus very warm water. it's in the gulf stream. the water that comes out of the gulf of mexico, goes around the florida keys and then on up to the northeast coast. that's why the water in the carolinas is so warm, because it's really out of the caribbean. category 4 hurricane trying to make landfall here somewhere in the overnight hours. a sleepless night for anywhere from about ft. pierce, west palm

it just left nassau, the bahamas in terms of this eye wall. and west. that puts hurricane-force winds with this band right here still well away from the florida coastline. we say sustained winds of 140 miles an hour. if you are going to find winds at 130, 140, that would be with the northern around northeastern iial... eye wall with the track, too. when the national hurricane center puts out the forecast and you see that line, that is for the eye. you figure, even if this hurricane does track a little bit offshoreyo hurricane-force winds along the coastline. if the hurricane tracks with its eye and eye wall over the coastline, you bring in the hundred-plus-mile-per-hour winds. and that is when you would see the most damage. it is a possibility here, especially getting closer to melbourne and then up through the space coast of florida as we get through the overnight hours tonight and through the day tomorrow. thereafter, it starts to weaken in terms of wind speeds. this will produce flooding rain for south carolina, portions of north carolina, at least i

there, in fact, there is nassau, there is the eye of the storm, headed right toward nassau. then eventually toward freeport if you have ever been down thereon vacation. now, we are also watching tropical storm nicole. butts that's spins just under hurricane status out to the east of matthew. and we will see if that ever has any influence, it could, maybe, into next week. but we see the path of this storm still strengthens to a four as it possibly could make several landfalls, in fact there is latest track of the storm has it so close, to the coast, that we may see it make landfall, maybe around daytona beach, maybe around west palm beach. but, with four status, it will be strong even if it doesn't. and then, you see, it still continues to make this turn, just off the coast of south carolina, in fact, little further south, making that turn, as of the 5:00 update. so that puts it even further away from us, if we ever had any doubt about the path of the storm, then it makes that u-turn, and goes back toward the south again. what happens after that, oh, who can say? but just to
