natalie mentioned it a few moments ago. a separate topic has been the excessive flooding that's occurred near the border of malaysia and thailand. it is thanks to this northeasterly wind encountering the land mass across this area. so what we're seeing is an abundance of moisture from the south china sea helping build these thunderstorms. the more moisture available the more thunderstorms start to build. all we need is some sort of updraft to get the thunderstorm forming. and this is what we saw at the time that last contact was reported with the air asia flight. this is the anatomy of a thunderstorm. roughly about 20,000 feet in the air. this is the side view of a thunderstorm. roughly 20,000 feet we start to notice temperatures below freezing. so any liquid would freeze above this particular altitude. so if we've got thunderstorms towering at 53,000 feet, the airport trying to ascend to 38,000 feet, it's going to encounter ice nukeleeeye across this area and that could have a negative effect on the pitot tube i talked abo

hello again, i'm natalie allen from cnn center.rch and rescue operations under way right now for a missing air asia airplane. flight 8501 was en route from the indonesian city of surabaya. there it is at the bottom of your screen. to singapore. just a two-hour flight. when it lost contact with air traffic control early sunday morning. most of the plane's flight path took it over open water. there were we're told heavy thunderstorms in the area and the pilot asked to change the route because of the weather. apparently trying to vector around some serious storms. soon after that request was made contact with the airplane was lost. this is a picture here of the missing plane. it again is an airbus a-320 with airasia airlines a no-frills airline has got an excellent safety record. 162 people were listed on the flight manifest. 155 passengers and seven crew. here's the breakdown that we know about. most are indonesians on this flight. with three south koreans, one singaporean, one from malaysia and one french person on board. we've also

i'm natalie allen. the story is airasia flight 8501. it's missing, it's been missing for hours. it went missing with heavy thunderstorms in the area around the time it lost contact with air traffic controllers. here's ha we know. we're going to break it down for you. it happened early sunday morning local time there in indonesia. as the plane was flying from surabaya north to singapore, it's about a two-hour flight. search and rescue operations are under way, c-130s are in the air, there are ships in that area very heavily trafficked area with many ships. so should be many eyes trying to find any sign of this plane. no sight of it yet. most of the path took it over water. the pilot asked to change route because of the weather. asked to ascend to 38,000 feet. there was a storm at 52,000 feet so no way to get up over it. soon after that request was asked for a dieversion for the flight and all communication was lost with the airplane. it is an a-320. a no-frills airliner. there were 162 people listed on the flight manifest 155 passengers and seven crew most on board indonesians. t
