the first glimmer, the first call to name the "star spangled banner" specifically as our national anthemer the civil war writes a song -- excuse me, writes a book saying we need a national song that we're a nation that was nearly torn asunder, we're back together. the french have theirs, and the germans have this and that and the english have "god save the king." on page 47 or something like that, i'd have to check, he says the best expression of american patriotism is francis scott keye's song, i suggest we name that our national anthem. it didn't get a movement started, but for some reason i mentioned john phillip sufil li before he toured worldwide with his own private souza bang, he played "the star spangled ban r banner" as a band, but sometimes sung. he had a lot to do with displacing "hail columbia." by the turn of the 20th century there are people that don't like the "star spangled banner" and they put on contest for a national song. trying to get new submissions, i need something better than the "star spangled banner", you know? 1918, the first time the "star spangled banner" is

we went over everyone who had ever performed in the national anthem.marvin gaye's version of it. it was more open and free. we changed the meter from a standard three, four meter waltz thing. don't listen to my singing. don't judge me on that. we change that had to a four four meter where she could have a little more time. we wanted to the put in gospel, chords and gospel movement with the jazz sensibility and a classical or more or contest raal layout. it was totally different nochlt one had done that. she gave me the green light to do it, and i did it. i produced it and john clayton jr. did the arrangement. i flew with the arrangement in my arm to florida. we recorded it, and no one liked it. the orchestra didn't like it. cbs hated it. i get a call from john houston, her family and manager and said, ricky, we worked really hard to make this happen. don't go down there and mess it up. they said there's a call for you, and i thought it was a call with john houston telling me congratulations, great job. it wasn't there. to there was a definite push to n

so how do to you that to the national anthem?ns of cultural, multi-culturalism or cultural differences. any other questions? we still have some time. oh, i'm sorry. >> that's okay. going back to the slide that had the notice about not playing black records, do you think that it was just the fact that they were african-american artists, or was it the fact that rock and roll was starting to come into play with artists like chuck berry and that was all very provocative when it came to music? >> yeah. i think it was certainly the fact that it was black artists, but i think what was really scaring the, i guess, the city fathers of the white south was that at these rock 'n' roll showers, bear in mind, you know, in the south, and you know this from having read ann moody, these public gatherings were supposed to be segregated. in the movies, the whites are in the mezzanine. the blacks are in the balcony. at these concerts, what they would do is they would run a tape down the middle of the auditorium, and whites are supposed to stay on on
