it temporarily went to the national archives. it was there for about a year. it was then given back to the cemetery and stored. it was not until the 1990's that the box was put back into the building itself. there was other construction going on and they took the opportunity to place the box back into the building. then it wasn't revealed again until this year, 2020, when we were celebrating the anniversary of the memorial amphitheater's construction. we took the box out in april. just before the anniversary. because, with the covid-19 situation, the pandemic, the cemetery wanted to make sure we had the opportunity to let the public see the opening of the box. so, in preparation for the anniversary, we were doing an online exhibit. so we opened the box in april. and, by may, we had the online exhibit available to the general public. my role in opening the box was that i was one of a large team of anc staff. our historian, tim frank, really took the lead. he's the one who did a lot of the research into the memorabilia box, what was in it, what it was constructe

color troops were federalized so all of their records were in the national archives in washington and were digitized so these are easily , available on a website. the other resources i used were the wisconsin historical library for their wisconsin service records their wonderful collection, and the archives. i used information from a number of local libraries and museums including the wisconsin veterans museum archives, milton house museum, cunningham museum in lancaster, and the civil war museum in kenosha, among others. the national archives in washington was a great source too because they have all the pension documents for all all servicemen it. these are not digitized so that required me making multiple multiple trips to to the national archives and they also have regimental histories there which i did make use of. before the war, there was the african-american population wisconsin was scattered over the whole state, predominantly rural and small towns. there were a couple of communities i want to mention . one was pleasant ridge community in in grant county near lancaster. this

i think that has come to fruition, but you also have affiliations of course with the national archive the library of congress, can you tell us about that? julieanna: sure, our main official affiliation is with the library of congress. that is mainly that is an important affiliation because we are housed at their packer campus, it is the largest facility for material anywhere in the world. i want to say this because archives are expensive business. it is very labor-intensive, it is not just interviews, but how do you guarantee long-term preservation? there was an organization called the association of moving image archives and specifically a man named james linder who became our godfather in terms of the archival world. he one time visited my office and i had these tapes and i was like what am i going to do? and he said that i think this belongs in the library of congress. we are the largest facility for av material anywhere in the world. it was filled by david packer, it means that we do not ever have to digitize the collection again. it is in the government hands and a video collecti
