sutton retired as chief historian of the national park service in 2016 after serving in the position for nearly nine years. he came to this position following his tenure as the superintendent of manassas national battlefield park for the past 12 1/2 year, and he has published a number of book, articles, and reviews on various public history topics. and one of his i prooi mare interests as chief historian and superintendent at manassas was leading the emphasis on expanding the interpretation of the civil war for the centennial. dr. sutton is currently serving as a consultant to the american battle monuments commission, assisting commission staff in developing interpretive programs to commemorate the centennial of world war i, and he is currently working on a book on world war i aimed at middle school children. he teaches courses in the johns hopkins senior adult program on the civil war in the american west. he will be the resident historian for viking ocean cruises as well. dr. sutton also has written a book on the civil war

national park where the battles were fought in 1777 during the american war for independence. saratoga historic national park consists of 4100 acres. it was established in 1948 as a park within the national park service system. the british army had a plan in order to defeat the american rebellion. it was they would have an army leave canada and move south and capture the city of albany. from there that army would be able to operate either in lower new york or throughout england and attack american forces that were fighting against them. the british set off from canada in june of 1777. they traveled hundreds of miles and eventually got here to saratoga battlefield, located 30 miles north of the city of albany. september 1777, the british army moved south in expectation of engaging the american army commanded by horatio gates in battle. the two armies collided here at the battle of freeman's farm. it began at about 11:30 in the morning very near to where we are standing in the world and lasting until 7:00 in the evening. the battle resulted in a british victory. the british won. they won because they held the field of battle. the american army retreated because they had lost. the british suffered more

petro glyph national monument is one of the few national park units that's actually owned and operated not solely by the national park service managed by the city of albuquerque and the national park service and we work together with the city to help protect and preserve these resources for the future. in the last 20 years we have had several challenges. land acquisition, being everything for everybody, the creation of trails. vandalism, the construction of roads through the monument, expansion of a general aviation airport. probably our biggest challenge is stormwater runoff from upstream suburban development because we are completely surrounded by the city of albuquerque. >> as you walk the trails of petro glyph national monument and you look along the escarpment you might notice large concentrations of black boulders. that is where we often see concentrations of petro glyphs. we are in the heart of the canyon where there is a dense concentration of petro glyphs. we have documented over 24,000 petro glyphs within the monument boundary. this canyon is home to 5,000 of them. we see an animal over here. we are not really sure
