navy. it is always a pleasure to welcome dr. craig symonds back to the smithsonian. he has presented several outstanding programs over the years on topics relating to use naval history. dr. symonds is a professor at the naval academy and the first to win an excellence teaching award and excellence in research award. in addiction, he served as the academy's history department chair from 1988-1992 and received the department of the navy superior service medal three time. prior to coming to the naval academy he was professor of strategy at the war college in newport, rhode island. and the royal college in dartmouth, england. he is the author or editor of 26 books including prize winning biographies of johnson, franklin bucannikin -- buchanan. his book decision at sea; five naval battles that shaped america's history won the theodore and franklin award. lincoln and his admirals books won several prizes along with the lincoln prize and the lincoln institute book award. and his newest book, "the
